Me too...Time was short, as the morning session ran over. This horse had laminitis, and I would have liked to see Dave and Mark work on the other horse, but the time would not allow.

Phil it was a room full of farriers and vets. They agreed on everything. What else would you expect?

It was like any conference- you might choose to focus on the things we disagreed on, or the number of things we agreed on. I can assure you we did not agree on everything, but there were many things we did agree on.

How's that for black and white?

The one aspect of hoofcare that I insist is black and white? that everything is gray...it either works for a horse or it doesn't.

I'll play your reindeer games.... ;)

Actually, one thing that was a constant drum beat by both Dave D. and Mark C. was what they both felt it was very important to trim the heels back to the widest part of the central sulcus of the frog, NOT further back to the widest part of the frog itself...... It got me thinking that I wasn't exactly sure which I did on a routine basis, though I knew I was close.... so.... I paid particular attention to it this week and though the difference is subtle to be sure... usually only an 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch on most feet, it has me wondering if the difference has any importance.

I can see that by trimming to the back of the frog, you would most likely end up with a palmar angle closer to if not at zero, where leaving the heels at the widest part of the central sulcus, you could expect to have a more positive palmar angle, assuming the rest of the trim is the same..... so if we accept the desired "norm" to be 3 to 5 degrees positive, are we setting our feet too "flat" by trying to get those heels back as far as we can? ( It's a tempting thing to do on a run forward foot that we are trying to get to "remodel"). It has me thinking, are we setting ourselves up to actually encourage a negative palmar angle????

It was definitely worth the modest price of admission...... I was embarrased at how poorly attended this was considering you had Duckett, Caldwell, and Pat's force plate in your own back yard for two days for a lousy 125 bucks?????

I would guess around 50- but to be fair the posting here was the only advertising on the clinic anywhere. While I appreciate Dr. Myhre for hosting these clinics, Phil's point is valid- he does not get these together until the last moment and he does not advertise except for word of mouth. I suggested Dave and Mark as speakers because I really wanted to hear them talk.

Dave

Why would you be embarrassed Dave?

For 125.00 I was in your neck of the woods this weekend. University of Maine for a two day clinic. Met some great folks and it turned out to be an excellent clinic. Sorry you missed it. Can't say I was embarrassed that you missed it or that others missed it, we were busy learning from each other to notice. :) Hope they hold another one next year.

Will be at the Vermont Farrier's association clinic/forging competition first part of November. Also will be continuing our weekly winter hammer-in soon at Meader Supply. Your welcome to join us.

Yep... I'm sorry I missed Mike at U Maine.... I always enjoy him. Planned to go 'till I realized that Kevin had scheduled it the same weekend as my favorite charity's largest fundraiser of the year, ( a large therapeutic riding center that I have the privilege of caring for their horses podiatry needs at). .... Saturday was Boots, Band, and BBQ night!

I'm sure it was a great clinic, and would have been cheaper for me for sure......;)
Glad you could make it! Tell us what happened!

Dave

Unfortunately Mike never showed up, I hope he is well. Fortunately we had a clinic anyways. I learned farriers are a good bunch and will adapt to a situation. We pressed on and had a great two day clinic. Shared ideas, did some horses and ate great food. Will share more detail when I get a chance. Probably should start a new thread.

Again I hope Mike is well.
