I think this trend went into a different direction than I had planned. About the spelling.. Microsoft word spells it Ferrier!! So I went with that... lesson learned. When I stated actual shoeing is the easy part, I meant that it’s the most straight forward; it’s where we know what to do. I like Anne Tree Coleys post "Do you have friends with horses"? She gave me some help on where to start! THANK YOU. I have always learned, talk to someone who has been there. They can point you in the right direction. And if you can, talk to a pro! Then shut up and listen! thank you for your input!

Not trying to be rude, but come back in a few years and see if you still beleive that.

People have been argueing about how to shoe a horse for thousands of years and we still don't have it figured out.

That's a milliner. ;)

In my area we are still referred to as "blacksmiths" 95% of the time.

"I'm looking for a blacksmith to trim my horse" just doesn't sound right to me.

Other than doing a good job while under the horse. Cuz that seems to be the easy part about this business.

My first piece of advice would be to ride along with a fulltime working farrier and see what the business is all about. Farrier Science programs are nice for learning anatomy and theory but this is a very practical "rubber to the road" type profession and your statement above leads me to believe you have never seen a horse shod in person. If you think that shoeing a horse properly is easy work you have a another thing coming my friend. Doing a good job under the horse is actually the HARDEST part of the job IMO

Prepare to be humbled and best of luck to you

Friend call my recent apprentice and ask him if he thisks this is an easy business getting under horses. ( He really thought he was a horse shoer ready to take on the world when he came home from Doug Butlers School in Nebraska.)
It took one day and one draft for him to recant his statement and QUICKLY develope a lot of humility.

2 months later after working under me, he has a new found respect for this trade.

He realizes today that all the benifits coming out of this trade come from doing a quality job and by continueing his education.

Riding along with other farriers/ferriers/horseshoer's/plater's
allows one to grow in wisdom and to expand one's knowledge and available skills.

Word of mouth will get you work.
But if you think your coming into this business and immediately going to have a full line up of customers, allow me to tell you it doesn't happen that way.(not for the majority)
You have to pay your due's.. like so many of us did..
That means it is OJT and IF you have the DESIRE/TENACITY and INTEGRITY
you just might make it in this business.

As much as I hate to say it, I find the time spent w/ my head down and my @zz up much easier than the time spent explaining to owners why their 1200lb, foundered, navicular Qtr horse w/ 00 feet needs shoes and can't stay barefoot.:rolleyes:
Not to mention fighting traffic/construction, schedualing/re-schedualing, and hauling wheelbarrow loads of cash/checks to the bank.

Mike,
I had business cards made up and I left them in the usual places- grain stores, tack shops, vet clinics. I did not expect people to see a card and decide to call me, but it puts your name out there. If my name came up later, a horse owner had at least heard of me before. I would try to ride with multiple farriers after completing school (I expect you will find that most schools prepare you for the basics, and not much else). Local farriers are not your competition, but rather are a good source of clients (many established farriers have enough clients, and might refer new calls your way) and a good start in the "word of mouth" department.

Gary Hill in gray

I am sorry but you might want to learn how to spell the word correctly.....It is FARRIER, not Ferrier?

Years ago, the TPFA had a January farrier/vet information exchange get-together at Texas A&M. One of the big motels in College Station gave us a good discount on room rates, so we blocked out 20 or 30 rooms for the deal and they were so glad to book all those rooms in the middle of winter, they changed their marquee sign to say
Welcome Texas Farries!
I thought it was pretty cool, but Jack Miller (RIP) made 'em change it to "farriers."

Spelling counts. :)

I had an acquaintance recently ask me how my career change was going, and the conversation was very confusing for several minutes while I nattered on about forge work and horses and he looked more and more perplexed, until he finally said:

"I thought you said you were becoming a FURRIER. . .?"

I imagine he was trying to figure out who was buying horse hide clothing.
