Hey, wanted to bounce something off you all and get some feedback:

I charge the same ($40) to trim all equines ( minis, saddlehorses, drafts,) and just up my price when I have an outlaw or insane growth. Obviously my customers with drafts don't mind but I have a few new customers with minis that have been grumbling lately. I want to take the same care and attention to detail with a mini as I do with a full size horse, so I charge the same. I've heard some farriers charge less for minis but their attitude seems to be "well they're just minis, take a nipper run and a few swipes with the rasp and move on".

And, I've heard some farriers charge more for drafts. How about you all? I have found a well behaved draft takes maybe 3-5 extra minutes than a QH or Arabian (ok maybe a minute more to tie up that hair, LOL), and since I'm not using any consumables (shoes, nails, etc.) I just don't see the point in upping the price. Also I use a hoofjack for all 4 hooves on drafts so sometimes it seems a little easier. Never worked on a huge draft, just light drafts.

Any comments would be of interest. Am I doing it wrong? lol.

I have found drafts are from 2 to 4 times the work as a saddle horse. I charge 40 x2 = 80 for drafts.

I find minis are harder than saddle horses as one is either kneeling and your knees hurt or bent over to an insane degree stressing ones back. The tools are too large for a mini foot and it just takes more time to do a good job.

I used to charge the same for minis but getting tired of "they are small I want a discount' whining raised the rate to $43 for minis. I genrally then reduced the rate "just for you" to $40.00.

The last time I printed price lists I just listed minis at 40 as the compliants just dont seem to come up anymore as my practice has matured. I am now 10 years in.

Don't forget you're in this to make money. Charge what the market will bear. If you can get $40 for a mini or saddle horse and $80 for a draft, why wouldn't you. If you can only get $20 for a mini and $40 for a saddle horse, and they take the same amount of time, why would you even bother with the mini. If you can do the mini in half the time, and don't have to make an additional stop, that might make sense.

Try to figure out what a trim costs you. Don't give your work away, and charge as much as you can get. If I could charge $100 for trims, I would. If the gas station owner could charge $20 per gallon for gas, do you think he wouldn't?

We don't get paid by the inch or the ounce, we get paid to provide a service. Charge accordingly. I, like George, charge more to trim drafts. I charge more to trim neglected hooves or those with severe pathology. And I don't work on horses that are uncooperative or dangerous. Exceptions noted.

When/if someone asks me if I give discounts, I reply, " I sure do. I count 'dis' and I count 'dat' and I count everything else I do, too. ;)

For the very few drafts I do, they are double my saddle horse rates. Something that was hard for me to learn at first, was that if you are too cheap, you get all the puke horses that nobody else wants. :o:) I've seen some of the drafts that get done by those folks and NO way do I want to be under them!! :D Most minis I do are just companion animals or pets, they all get charged normal saddle horse rates. However, here most of the show mini people either do it themselves or want to pay about $10-$15 a head. Sometimes when I get a call to do a big herd I might do them a bit cheaper, but I am only 5' 4" and getting down there to do them isn't quite as hard for me.

That depends.

I rolled up to a job (1x shoe 1 x trim) where a BUA was doing a trim, she was already working.

I had set up, done the trim and had two shoes on the other horse before the trimmer was done.:eek:

Also, the hostility was palpable. :p

I charge double for drafts too.

Maybe I am just not built to trim full drafts but they are for me harder to hold onto with my legs, there is way more hoof to trim, and the full drafts don't seem to get their hooves picked up except when the farrier comes.

Minis are my normal saddle horse rate and I have a client with 19 minis very happy to pay it after the mess made by the discount mini trimmers in her area.

I like minis though. They make me laugh even when they are trying to be bad. Only trouble is standing up after doing 19 in a row. That is a bloody long time to be curled up in a ball.:D

Would you be interested in working as a sub-contractor for draft horse trims? I'll pay you your rate and do all the scheduling and all the advertising for the draft horse trims.

Maybe I could slowly increase the price for Drafts. Can't do it to my current light-draft customers. Well, I increased my prices last year. That was hard enough. Lost a few in the mix. Have you all had issues with increasing your prices?

I see that you all mostly double the price. I may have to re-think this. Seems like it's the norm.

When I started I was at $25/trim for light horses. My backround is as a sales and marketing VP and this was a career change. Knowing that big price increases can cause loss of customers I began to go up $1 year. many years later I am at $41 for light horses and I believe lost nobody due to price. I call the strategy "who he heck cares about a buck" takes time but preserves customers. Had I gone 4 or 5 years at the same price and then jumped to $30 I probably would have lost customers but small increases that keep up with inflation everybody understands.

Scotty,
Did you raise your price 10%? Did you lose 10% of you clientèle? If it worked like that you broke even except that you got two days a month off with pay. (40 hours minus 4 hours per week times 4 weeks equals 16 hours per month off at the same income)
You will also be looked at with more respect from the higher quality horse owners, and fellow Farriers.
