onion heels don´t support anything if you don´t have bars underneath them. what is more important is to decide whether you need to make extension to the ground- or foot side. that´s what is influencing the grf.

I disagree Juhani. The onion heel shoe can be used either in contact with the sole or to simply increase the surface area of the caudal half of the shoe. This changes how the hoof is positioned in soft footing (arenas, race tracks), gererally increasing the hoof angle during loading. This increase in hoof angle changes the force on the limb, just as a wedge pad/shoe would but this change is only observed in some specific situations. On hard footing, there would be little effect, but a big potential for effect in soft footing.

Here is a horse I do the LF is under run. When I first started doing him about a year and half ago his sole was prolapsed, hoof wall was brittle and falling apart, very distorted, crushed heels and very sore. The owner claimed they have tried everything, egg bars, frog support and wedge pads to get his feet in shape and keep him sound. First shoeing got his feet in shape the best I could, very Conservative on the sole and used KH size 3, which consider a decent width and thickness for this size horse. Deep seated the shoes, leather pads and magic cushion he walk off much better. He should be on a 4-6 week schedule in my opinion, unfortunately it will go 6-8 weeks. His feet look much better on a shorter cycle. He does great in this style shoeing, nothing complicated.

Big improvement, Phil. The shod solar view indicates you have fit the heels where I would normally/usually fit them. The lateral view of the shod foot indicates to me that the heels of the shoe should be further back. It also shos me a hoof that is disproportionate if one is using the COA as a component of how the hoof is 'framed'. Have you rolled the toe and have you considered rockering it?

All that aside,, yo've definately improved the status quo. Good on you for that.

Thanks Rick

I find these type of feet interesting. I agree it is disproportionate if using the COA as reference. It seems to me If I were to rocker the toe or roll the toe to get the foot 50/50 from the COA the caudal aspect the hoof would be loaded more, kind of like using wedge pads. I'm not a 100% positive this occurs, however it seem like it does. These type of feet seem like they are already under a lot of stress in the caudal aspect and would run the risk of increased impact and load into the coffin bone wings. This horse was sore in the area of the coffin bone wings. His sole was prolapsed and heels crushed, since I have been shoeing him this way he has gained more sole depth and concavity.

Why not hammer a roll into the toe?

If I wanted to shorten the toe length I could have, I mentioned in my reply to Rick my reasoning for not rolling or rockering the toe.

Sorry Phil;

but that is not even a rolled toe; dear, more of a hit on the grinder type of thing.
and you know better and you could do a rocker toe as well.

Dare I point out that Phil addressed those issues(rolled toe, rocker toe) and why he decided not to make either modification, in his reply to me? ;)
