Thanks Baron for the edits ;)

This is all childish, as usual, when you are involved.

Whip and Drive - where did I say anything about plastic shoes in this thread?

Please stay focused. I'll be sure to remember your thoughts when I'm putting on steel shoes all week :)

RICK about erics so called failure ,Actually, I couldn't care less about your failure(s). I mentioned it only because you seem to be on your high horse and you keep falling on your face every time you step down. Fact is, you demonstrated your inability to meet an everyday shoeing standard and apparently, that has rankled you ever since.

What was involved with this every day shoeing standard? if its anything to go by that iv seen of what is presented by some on this forum , That of cutting heels far to low, rasping the wall back to much & boxing the foot to the point that horn becomes dyed out shale & brittle causing driving a simple nail in to good horn now one of risk & a guarantee the height & strength of such nails wont be achieved nor last the shoeing cycle, then there's the cosmetic butchering practise of rasping up to the hair line & over paring of the sole & frog , I would most likely fail that every day shoeing standard myself , for I don't practice those centuries of documented faults & malpractices in shoeing, that seem to flourish amongst the ignorant. what I find amusing Rick, is that someone would pay to see your work with all of the above practised by you, I'm sure you past with flying colours if that is the standard .

Unless "Troll" is your real full name, you'd best start using it.

This thread is an example of why I resigned my membership in the Guild and my RJF "credential." How can farriery be a profession when no two practitioners can agree on a standard? How can farriery be a profession when no organization can establish credibility? I'm embarrassed and ashamed of myself.

I put energy and effort into the idea that farriers in this country are capable of building a consensus. Collectively, we cannot even have an intelligent conversation about what should be considered "professional." Thus ends my experiment in trying to bring substance to the "idea" that farriery is a profession. We certify ourselves to our individual lowest common denominator - the pay check. :p

I don't think there's any reason to be ashamed of yourself but I also don't see any need for a consensus.

I run my business and you run yours. What "I certify myself to" or what standards I set for myself or what standards my clients set for me really isn't anything that you need to be concerned about. I just might want to run a business that's very different than the business that you want and very different criteria may apply.

Why should I care who considers this a "profession"? If I don't get the respect, esteem or money that I think I should from my clients and immediate peers (or any one else who might matter to me) then it's up to me to do something about it. Why would I look to other farriers for it?

IMO, one of the greatest things about this trade is that you can do it how you want. It's always seemed to me that there are some farriers willing to ruin that so they can think of themselves as a "professional". Let them think of themselves as they see fit and leave me out of it.

I resigned my short lived membership in the AFA when the president started rambling about licensing. That was a real wake up call for me.

Tom, farrier's in Europe and Australia seem to have achieved the "concensus" you are describing. Is the difference government involvement or something else?

Cheers,
Mark

When I first decided to come back to this trade I decided I was going to do everything "right" and correct as many of the mistakes I made the first time around as I could. I've done my share of badge collecting and I started with the thought of pursuing certification but that didn't las long.

The other day my wife got the idea that I was going for certification and she asked. I said no...just trying to make 4 nice plain stamped shoes in 6 heats (3 heats/pair) and 40 minutes or less. I don't even have much use for light even weight plain stamped shoes. It's just for me. Let others go their own way and pursue their own interests and goals.

I think some of us on this side of the pond tend to be more independant...a "rugged individualist" kind of thing.

Your buddy Rick named me that a few years back & you fully endorsed it the other day with your feeding comments & advice , legally you can go by any name you wish to be called & if your known as that by other persons, the only exception is if your using it for criminal purposes which I haven't to date & hopefully wont get a sweet tooth for that sort of thing.
