Hello my name is Chris and I have been lurking for a while just now registered. But i am not a farrier but I do want to be. Which leads to my question. I know that I have (should) go to school to learn how to do this but with my job I have now I dont really have that option. I cant get the time off, I would just have to go ahead and quit. And I have asked to ride along with a couple of farriers and so far none have said yes. My question is what would you guys do if you were in my situation? Or what should I do? And suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Do you have any experience at all? Have you had zero opportunity to ride along with a farrier? Before quitting a day job make sure you are confident this is what you want to do. It's definitely not a job for everyone.

Here's an opportunity for you.

Tomorrow, Friday, May 28; 1:00 PM at my facility. I've got some shoeing and trim work to do; a couple on difficult horses. Might be worth the trip to at least get some idea of what it's like. You're welcome to come along. Drop me a private message if you're interested. I'm about 35 miles east of Cincinnati.

Cheers,
Mark

Start out my handling horses on the ground, work with them, grooming, leading, an learning what the word whoa means, understanding horse behavior is very important to make farriery safe.

Find a stable where you can go visit, work with these horses and meet their farrier. Let them know that your interested in learning and most farriers would love the opportunity too feel important for an hr. by telling you how they got started in this trade.

Get the body in condition and pick horses feet up, get right under there by putting the hoof between your legs, learn how to get you and the horse comfortable. This is the most important thing you need to learn, " Oh Buttercup", may have had a pretty name but my back is still sore from that job, get your body in shape. We farriers make the job look easy.

Buy or go to a library and pick up a book I studied, Principals of Horse Shoeing by Dr. Doug Butler, read it.

just a few thoughts , horse handling, getting in shape, and finding someone who will help you.

hope this helps,

David

ps: don't worry about the scent of smell, you'll get used to that.

I've been / am in in your situation. The above advice from others is definitely worth taking and YES if some farrier offers a bone, TAKE IT, and be very modest and thankful as this person is a valuable asset. You also have to decide if you have "skills" that if you give up your job you can still make an alternative living whilst learning, (drive a truck?, stack shelves, bar work? - anything). OR get some skills that work on a part time basis that keep your head above water once you've done school, and yes, you need to go to a school, yes you need several farriers BEFORE you go to school, who are willing to take you one as an "apprentice" (i.e doing the pulling and clinching), till you get your hand skills, go to the local clinics and join the AFA. Have money to start up, NEVER think you can borrow any. Then think this simple thing - I am 100% committed to this ;- taking a long walk off a short plank. You have to develop a totally different mind set, as you are the workforce, theres no managers, no employees to say this or that, it's YOU - this will be the hardest thing you will ever do. But the rewards are there, and believe me, they are completely worth having, it will change your life, hopefully for the better, just keep grinding at it. Go for it, and be lucky.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I have found a farrier to ride with!!! And right I think my best bet is try to get myself out of a little debt and save some more money for my school fund. And the handling/smell and everything like that I am used to. And thank you guys/gals again for the helpful advice.
