Advertising to gain clients 26 Apr 2010 17:41 #1

Hi yall, moved back down to Texas after my 2 years in canada and am struggling to start my business back down here. I have done the usual things got new business cards made, magnets for my truck, and put an ad in the thrifty nickle. When I was shoeing down here before I had the phone ringing off the hook, now I have nothing. Any suggestions on how to get the word out?

unfortunately, once you leave, it's hard to get it back. it takes a lot of time

even when people have been out and sick, injured. get a regular job, and shoe on the side, until you get a new clientelle together.

Going through exactly the same thing if you substitute Canada for Minnesota and two years for 10. Cold up there, ay?

The Thrifty Nickle, as I have been repetedly reminded is now called the American Classifieds. I spent nearly $100 bucks with them and got one call, a dud, in two weeks of advertizing.

I placed an ad in the East Texas Farm and Ranch and in 3 weeks have gotten no response. Quite possibly due to the fact that they misspelled "Lameness" as "Lamaners" and after I brought this to their attention reprinted it the same with the addition of another misspelling, I now shoe "hors" with "Lamaners". Not a positive advertizing experience

What I have gotten real good response from is the few flyers I put out. I have about a dozen out in feed stores in several locations with "HORSESHOEING" in real big print and get a few calls every day. Go figger.

I think the economy sucks or something, too. Best of luck, Dutch

Say, a guy quoted me $100@ for magnet signs, ain't that on the high side?
Dutch Denson CF

“A bar of iron costs $5, made into horseshoes its worth is $12, made into needles its worth is $3500, made into balance springs for watches, its worth is $300, 000. Your own value is determined also by what you are able to make of...

sounds a bit expensive, I got 3 made for $79 real proffesional looking if you want to private message me I can give you his name don't know if he ships but may be worth it

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I did give plenty of notice before I moved and I have just blanketed the feedstores and western shops in town with cards, ganna hit the tack stores and out of town feed stores tommorow. I just hate advertising in the newspaper because they are not cost effective if not getting any calls, going to see where the horse shows are held at around here now, and see what I can work there

James, I've been here over a year, though my situation is a little different- I'm a year out of school. I had an ad in the local freebie paper, but have quit that- I seemed to get more people interested in price than quality.

I have put on a few demos at horsey related events in the area. Our church put on a deal this weekend where two trainers started 2 green colts, and I did a live demo between the two sessions with the forge, shoe building, smoke, and all. Got a lot of attention, and had several people take cards.

If you can find a horse/ large animal vet to give you a good recommendation, or take care of a lameness case for someone who sees a lot of people, that will help, too.

I've actually just hopped in the pickup, and gone down the backroads, and introduced myself to people who had barns or horses in the pasture, and told them if they are happy with their current farrier, great, dont change a thing. If they want someone different, or if he/she cant get to it, give me a call. A clean rig and professional manner will go a long way.

Have you tried contacting other farriers in the area? It may seem counter-intuitive, but I do know a few locals (and no, I havent met $40 Full Set Johnny, have no real desire to), and one has sent some work my way when he got swamped.

Unfortunately, from a time standpoint, word of mouth is by far the best and most efficient way to get the word out. I think it gets a slow start, but onoce it gets going, it's like a runaway train down a mountain. I have a feeling my business will pick up shortly. In the meantime, I drive a truck part time, and the company works around my shoeing schedule.

Two things you might try are a craigslist ad in all the areas you want to work. You need to repost every few days at least to keep it on the first page. Craigslist has really blown up in the last two years.

The other thing is to find a rescue and offer to shoe a few for the cost of materials as long as each horse that goes out goes with one of your business cards. That way, at least, some folks will be seeing your work and hearing your name. I know one rescue in Alabama that has a sign up with their farrier's name and number on it that is seen by everyone who comes to the rescue.

Hope this helps
