TOPIC: Justifying your "high prices?"

RE:Justifying your "high prices?" 28 Apr 2010 15:47 #31

Most of the people that call know me for my work; and that I charge on the high end in this part of the country. If they ask what I charge in the first two sentence then I know that I will not be doing any work for them. If I am confronted about my cost I ask them (mostly women) how much does it cost to get your hair done and tell them there is a place around the corner that only charges 5 dollars to do the same thing why not go there, and that most of the time ends the discussion.
In life your work is your signature, try to sign with elegance and grace.
You do not have to be the best just care the most.

The last time a person ask me how much I charged my reply was "if you have to ask I'm not the person for you". She looked at me and didn't say anymore. It's been a long time since anyone ask me. I'm not the most expensive, but I'm not the cheapest. The way I look at it horses cost two things - time and money. If you don't have time or money, don't have the horse. That's what I tell people.

Do you look at price tags in the store? Would you commit to buying a house or a truck without knowing what it costs?

By your logic, if you take price into account in making those decisions, you shouldn't drive, eat or live under a roof. Do I have that about right?

There is really nothing to explain. "Sir, this is my price. If you feel it is too much to pay you should call someone else". Of course you charge this because you have clients that will pay that price, but that really isn't any of his business.

Yes you are right, but I bet you inspected the house, truck or goods you wanted before you ask the price? Guess I forgot to say this was the first question out of her mouth. Guess it was one of those moments you had to be there to get the jest of how she said it - if you know what I mean.

Yes, it's a bang for the buck thing. I agree that if the only consideration is price, the decision maker isn't thinking right.

For most consumers there are at least three things considered to some degree. Price, delivery and quality. How much, how fast and how good.

It's really all about the perceived VALUE not the dollar amount.

I have offered a client a "good deal on tool rental" if they would like to save money and shoe for themselves.

For that price, you could even punch some extra holes...no charge for the forge work.

Funny that today I got asked the price question by a fellow from out of town who was selling hay at the barn I was working at. He was selling the hay for $14 a bale and at a glance, it looked similar to the bales I'm buying from a local farmer on the friend pricetag for $7.00 a bale. Granted, his bales were probably a bit heavier but not too much. It looked like nice hay and I figured he'd have no problem getting his price if he was selling it to the type of barn this was.

So he asked what a set of shoes goes for these days. I told him I'm $175 for a set. He started going on about how the average person is getting to not be able to afford horses these days and the prices are crazy. It only costs him $85 for a set of shoes in his area. I smiled and said, "Yup, that is why most of the experienced farriers work in the area I'm in and won't go to the other areas of the province. I couldn't make a living full time in many other areas. The clients I have can afford their horses." He seemed to conclude the conversation wasn't going the way he had anticipated it would and he dropped it.

He's right, many people can't afford horses these days. That isn't my problem though. I have a very expensive vet bill to cover on my daughter's pony right now and while I'd love for the price to be less, it isn't so I fork over the money and get the pony cared for. If the little bugger doesn't take a turn for the better soon, I might have to have a little heart to heart with him mind you. Still not the vets problem.

booked my van in for the mechanic to take a look at the lpg system. I asked if they could let me know of a price before anywork commences. They said thats fine but it will still cost £86 per hour for labour before vat.

And some horse owners complain if you refuse to shoe a horse for £55 all in.
reality check. This is a trade too and we shoe to make a living. If we are not shoeing theres then we are shoeing someone elses for the price we require, not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring (as most customers imagine we are).

I set my prices to suit my locals, and the people that come to my place (still on the high end for my area) But started charging everyone a service charge by the mile round trip.

This helped me a lot.

I have several customers that come to my house to save the service charge, other customers arrange to all meet in the same place and split the service charge.

I don't care if a guy lives next door to my last stop, if I pack my truck and move, they pay the full service charge.

I get a lot of complainers, but I only work for the people that want me to do their work, and that is the way I like it.

If I leave the house, and do one horse I get 15.00 service charge(+ .45 a mile over 30 miles round trip) 75.00 for 4 keg shoes, so that is 90.00 for the job.

If I walk out the Door and work in my back yard, its 75.00 for the job.

I also don't figure "discounts" for doing several horses.

I got another way of putting that , cheap, fast or good, pick any two.
