Made this today while I was playing around... 00 SX8 and 1-3/4" of 5/16" x 3/4". The whole thing took me 20mins. (not counting the clips)

Cody, the examiners that I have tested under will look closer at the fit than anything. I turned in a fullered bar shoe from 5/16by3/4. It dang sure wasn't perfect, but I was able to pass 3 mods off that one shoe. I have seen arc welded bars in keggers pass, but if you turn in a decent forged bar shoe, they will give you a little slack for the effort.

Heres the one I turned in, and there is plenty wrong with it.

Chad, Nice job. What were the three mods? I was told that the fullering had to run completely around the toe to be considered a traction device?

I also got the impression that the examiners were mostly concerned with the basic elements of the shoe vs perfection. ei. is the shoe nailable: fit, level, nail position and fit, etc.

I'm guessing bar shoe, punched nail hole, fullering.

Unless there has been an update to the 2008 5th edition Certification Guide, In section 9, Two Types of Traction Devices, it says,
"All traction devices are manufactured or applied by the candidate.
Acceptable applications may include, but are not limited to, creasing/fullering, toe grabs, screw-in or drive-in studs, block heels, jar caulks, carbide particles(borium or drill tech)"

The Guide is silent on whether or not the fullering must run around the toe or not.

Rick, I read it the same way. I asked at a cert clinic and got the all the way around the toe answer. The reason I had asked was because I got regular creasing rejected as a traction device back in 2005, because it didn't go around the toe. No big deal at the time, I had plenty else wrong :o Since there was a question in my mind about it I went with studs and jar caulks the second time and got by.

I would suggets that you make what you will be fastest at the cert. If its a handmade they look nicer. But if you make a nice shoe with long heels that works. On the sheet the first check off is do all the shoes match the same pattern. If the answer is no. It dosn't matter how nice of a shoe you make you just got stoped.

I do agree that learning to make a shoe or barshoe by hand is a skill that you can use for the rest of your life. You will never have to turn down a horse if you have stock in the truck.

Chad, just wanted to add a little clarity. Testers have to simply work their way down a score sheet and score according to what the book states as the standard. And the very first box that has to be approved is "all fronts fit the same foot" and "all hinds fit the same foot" so it's not really that we're looking more at fit than anything else, it's just that it's the first thing that has to be approved before we can proceed. Secondly, no slack is given to anyone and all shoes whether they are kegs or handmades must contain the elements that are asked of the persons testing. Your shoe had all the necessary elements and was a nailable shoe and it fit the same pattern as the rest of your shoes. And that is why you passed that aspect, because you met the standard, and YOU earned it. I have yet to see a perfect shoe, if one even exists, so don't sell yourself short. Keep up the good work.

Cody,

Finally got a decent camera - my 1st one was a dud. Here is a picture of my show board bar shoe, and one I made from a long heeled Equine. The one from the long heel only takes about 10 mins, so you have plenty of time to clean it up. Not real good with the camera yet, these are actually my 1st pics downloaded, but you get the idea.
