I have till now not charged thinking that if I do owners will not allow me to help their horses with simple changes due to $5 or $10 for a trailer or square toe.

I have been looking at several farrier's websites and it has got me thinking that for instance a rocker toe, or square toe with trailer should cost a bit more due to time and propane.

So do you that charge for mods find it deters folks from letting you do these modifications?
Forget thinking outside the box, instead realize there is no box.

With the exception of drill and tap and other traction additions, I do not. As Scott Simpson once said when asked if he charged extra for a square toe "that's a shoe shape - I do not charge extra for shaping shoes". In general I see guys in lower priced areas charging for mods, those in higher priced areas calling them part of the job. Suit yourself. I did hear of someone who offered "regular" and "custom" shoeing. Regular meant he shaped the foot to the shoe, Custom meant shaping the shoe to the foot.

The best things about the good old days -- I wasn't good and I wasn't old.

The older I get, the more horses I shoe, the fewer things that I can absolutely, positively fix.

LOL I am surrounded by regular shoers.

I do custom work at my regular charge. But I do charge more than the hackers. :D

I don't charge any extra for clips, square toes, trailers, rockers, etc. As was said above, it's just part of shaping to me and clipping all the shoes saves me a lot of trip out to tack on shoes. I already have the shoe hot for shaping and fitting so I really don't have any extra time or propane expense as I see it. Just my thoughts.

Me too...I don't charge "extra" for mods.

I do charge for hand made shoes if there's a reason the horse needs them. For example, weighted show shoes. If I make shoes just because I want too and use them up because I can, I don't charge extra.

That said, I still want to be the highest paid farrier on the face of the planet. LOL

I charge additional fees for "additions" to the shoes, i.e.
  1. welding in a bar
  2. pads and/or packing
  3. traction - drill/tap or drive in or weld/braze
I don't charge additional fees for "modifications" made to keg shoes with hammer, fire, and grinder.

The former situation requires additional tools (and possibly additional setup/tear-down) time which I don't use in shaping and fitting shoes.

The latter requires my standard setup/tear-down; Pull out shoeing box and foot stand, swing out the forge, turn on the gas, pull out anvil stand and anvil, slide out grinder . . . it takes longer to write the bill. ;)

I charge for clips. All other basic modifications(square toes, rocker toes, rolled toes, extensions, caulks, etc) are just part of the job. Pads are extra, polymer packing under the pads is extra. Aluminum, polymer shoes, specialty shoes(toe weights, sliders, bar shoes, drill and tap, drill and drive-in studs and the like) are extra.

i charge for modifications, but i also shoe just as many horses cold as i do hot. if i need to shoe a horse hot then i feel i should also get paid for it.

i think this quote from Jack is probably pretty acurate.

If that is a confession, then say five "hail hot shoeing's" and light and use your forge every day. It is your only absolution.;)

Shaping shoes - no. Special shoes - bars, traction, shiding shoes, pads, packing - yes.
