This being my first spring as a farrier, I just wanted to know if there was anything inparticular i should prepare for. Are there certain supplies i should have stocked all the time(studs etc...) Does business pick up in the spring, tips or tricks for soft ground..... anything like that?

Thanks,
Dustin

In the spring the temperature will warm up, it will not be as hot as summer, nor cold as winter, almost fall-like, but in reverse. It is important to shoe the horse with this in mind.

I Don`t Know if its that same your end ,but one thing I really have to take care is that as soon as the first good weather comes ,or school holiday then everybody seems to want their horse shod at the same time....
we plan alot better now so that work is spread out remind ownere that their horse is due and that you need to plan ahead ..

Rapid hoof growth, softer soles due to the constant moisture in the ground(leave your knife in its pocket on your shoeing apron--resist the temptation to trim out any sole unless it is already falling out of its own accord) Sole bruising because the soles are soft and if the horse stpes on a rock .......

Business often picks up its pace starting in the spring. Be ready for lots of mud, horses shedding all over you, and the like. Carry Durasole with you for not only your use, but to sell to your clients too.

You may need pads, Magic Cushion, Hawthorne's sole Pack, Oakum, Hoof Felt. I keep diapers and duct tape close at hand in case I have to deal with a vented sub-solar abscess.

And, the names and phone numbers of the veterinarians who work on your client's horses, along with the names of some farriers whose knowledge and experience and willingness to help another farrier is evident.

Stock up on shoes. Studded, padded shoes come off. New shoes go on. Barefoot horses get shoes. New shoes go on. Muddy pastures, unfit horses, yahoo it's spring: shoes get pulled. New shoes go on. You get the idea.

oh man! is somebody calling for spring already, yee-haw lets get it on!:D

you should have no trouble giving away old rasps as they are by far the best shedding blade i've ever seen. (use them on edge with short firm strokes)

pack lots of thrush meds that you can sell your clients, i've found that with there feet as soft as they are it is real easy to "take em alittle short" so be careful.

Out of shape riders getting on out of shape horses = pulled shoes

Wet, soggy conditions = pulled shoes

Busted up post winter feet getting shoes = pulled shoes

And occasionally there is a horse that steps on a shoe.

Do not blame the mud, mud does NOT suck a shoe off, the horse steps on the shoe while trying to balance itself in the slippery.

Don't be discouraged, the first few springs are packed with pulled shoes....it gets better. (My mentor told me this as well.)

Yeah, what he said. Keep your nails high, your clinches short, and burn every foot that doesn't run away from you.

I kicked the heel of my boot off startin a 4 wheeler, nailed it back on pretty good. A few weeks after that I went to catch a horse in a muddy field. When I got back to the concrete floor of the barn my heel was missin! I spent the afternoon sticking my hand into every water filled hoof print in that field until I found my heel and nailed it back on. I don't think I stepped on my own heel trying to balance myself in the slippery mud, I think the blame mud sucked my heel off. Whatcha think:rolleyes:

Mud doesn't suck shoes off of horses hooves.

Come on Jay, We all know "mud sucks off shoe's"

With each step the suction take's hold and straightens out nails as it draws the shoe off the foot..;)

Heck I have seen prolapsed frogs caused by "mud suction"

The good thing about "mud suction" is it helps pull off sole that is ready to exfoliate...

Be sure not to use glue on shoe's during mud season cause when the shoe is sucked off it will take hoof wall with it.

my 2 cents worth :D

I think I'd go barefoot if I were you. You obviously are suffering from the absolute lack of bloodflow to your brain caused by the nails in your boot heel.

We weren't born with boots on you know.
