My girlfriend is looking at attending Dublin College for vet school and I was hoping that i could go with her if i could find an apprenticeship. I have heard there are lots of amazing farriers in Ireland and a huge horse population. And im very interested in apprenticing with someone especially seeing how it is done in a different country.

Thanks a lot,
Dustin

Dustin, the AFA has a cultural exchange program you might want to look into.

hey mikel how would you feel about having a foreign canadian exchange apprentice :P haha, just kinda curious what type of certification you have to have in denmark to be a farrier. Is it like england where you have to goto a mandatory school then have a registered apprenticeship for a set number of years and governed. or is it like here in canada and america where theres is no mandatory certification and its just all voluntary? Sorry im just kinda curious because i wouldnt mind travelling around europe and see what horseshoeing is like over there.
thanks,
dustin

For me, I'm not looking for an full time apprentice. Here in Denmark as of now, a farrier is not required to be certified. I do see it coming in the near future. They do have an apprentice program here which is 4yrs long.

I got an email back from the AFA and they said that you have to be a CJF to be eligible for the exchange program. That may be a couple years off for me  but i guess it gives me somethin to work towards ;)

Dustin,
Do you have any CJF in your area that you could get with every night tell the next certification? Practice your a$$ off and you gust might get your CJF in time. How soon are you guys looking at leaving?

I could be way off here but I don't think you've been to a school yet? If not why not try going to a school over there and then getting an apprenticeship from the school?

And that in itself is rather sad. YMMV.

Ok, sorry, I didn't realize you had already been to a school. As for having a lot to learn, that's true for most of us.

Have you looked into the possibility of getting into the apprenticeship program in Ireland or England? That might be something to shoot for? Just a thought.
