Look at the list and check which form of shoeing you perform.

Will be curious to see the results.

The poll above; check off whatr applies......

About 50% of my business is TWH's and ASB's, they are actually why I wanted to learn how to shoe a horse.

I do a little bit of everything else, except plating/track work, but it's mostly bush league or 4-h kind of stuff.

Jumping, dressage are big around here. I do a lot of "for fun" horses. I also work for a couple western trainers shoeing reiners, pleasure horses. I also have a couple working cowhorse owners.

hey mikel how would you feel about having a foreign canadian exchange apprentice :P haha, just kinda curious what type of certification you have to have in denmark to be a farrier. Is it like england where you have to goto a mandatory school then have a registered apprenticeship for a set number of years and governed. or is it like here in canada and america where theres is no mandatory certification and its just all voluntary? Sorry im just kinda curious because i wouldnt mind travelling around europe and see what horseshoeing is like over there.
thanks,
dustin

Holy Dooley the acronyms on this site!

TWH = Tennessee Walking Horses & ASB = American Saddlebreds? Yes?

Joey,

On anther threead (so this one doesn't go off course)
How about starting a pictorial of walking horse and saddlebred _"big Lick shoeing"

Even though most shoeing is on this board doesn't go towards this, there ARE a number of folks who do "Big Lick".

It will take on a life of its own, me thinks....;)

my 2 cents worth ;)

Well I don't really shoe any "Big Lick" TWH's. There aren't very many here in this part of the country. The term "big lick" generally refers to the horses in a 2-3" pad stack.

I have a couple that I reset every now and then while they're in between trainers/shows etc, but it's certainly not in my regular work.

Most of my TWH work is all "flat shod" meaning no pads or wedges etc. I do however shoe lot's of padded saddlebreds.

We don't really see these sorts of horses down here in the Shaky Isles, so I've always wondered - How the hell do you nail a shoe on with so much pad?

These were straight nailed with number 12's. It's a 3/8 X 1 toe weight with a thick plastic, a wedge and a heavy leather. With any more pads, I'd double nail...nail a thick plastic and a leather pad to the foot and nail everything else to that.

Mike,

How come no toe clips or bands? Why uses such big nails when double nailing is easier and safer?(JMO)

I've got some other views in my album (ferrara). I've got the shoes set back some on that horse.

I rarely use bands unless it's double nailed.

With that size package I usually straight nail as long as the foot is such that I can get decent nails. That horse has pretty decent feet and I leave them at about 4 1/4 when I reset so there's plenty of foot there to nail to.

Not to be argumentative, but how do you figure double nailing is "safer and easier"?

Personally, I don't mind applying a DNP, but resetting is a major pain IMO. With the padded horses I use between a size 8-10 nail for the most part. (3/8" shoe with a wedge and a leather or two) But there are some that I'll drive 16's in the heels before double nailing.

I crease the DN pad with a router to make resets easier.
