TOPIC: Schools and VA and some rambling

Schools and VA and some rambling 20 Dec 2009 18:34 #1

Has anyone here ever worked with Veteran Affairs to attend a shoeing school?
I wasn't planning on going to a school but really feel like it would move me along farther and faster.
I have been working with different farrier's for the last 4 years (the same one for the last year and I'll stay with him until he kicks me out of the truck or I start my own business). But I still have a long way to go. It's tough only having only one or two days a week to work with him.

I make shoes and tools in my garage whenever i get a chance and trim a few horses here and there and shoe a few drafts (yup, i do drafts).

my other problem is trying to pay a mortgage and support a family while i go to school.

one more thing how the heck do you guys and girls find all the time to do your forge work. If I spend a couple of hours in the garage I feel like a crappy husband and father. as it is, i spend less time on the computer to compensate for loosing time with them.

just rambling,
Jason Armstrong

Work hot and you are practicing and working at the same time. :D

I can't help with the VA stuff but I treat shop time just like any other part of the work week and schedule it in the best I can. I don't feel like a lousy husband or father for doing what I have to do to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.

My problem is that a lot of my work involves being on the road overnight so I can't usually spend time in the shop before or after shoeing horses. It's usually done on seperate days which does make it hard during busy times of the year.

Jason, go to the employment office in your town and ask for the VA rep.
They all have one to help veterans find work.
Ask him to give you the paperwork and he can tell you what to do.
Find a school that accepts VA and take the name and school curriculom to the VA rep and it will all flow from there.

I went to school back in 1971 on my Va benifits.

my 2 cents worth ;)

just rambling,

I know Bob Smith owner of Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School has had a lot of Veterans through and I believe someone who was attending when I was went through VA. You can e-mail him for info. He will tell you what he has experienced working with the VA even if you don't go to his school he is just that kind of person.

He actually has one veteran there at a time for a year long placement including school tuition so has a lot of experience with the VA. Can likely assist you.

Jason,

Since you've already been on the road for a fair amount of time there is probably a lot of stuff covered in a standard shoeing school that you have already seen and done.

While it would be great to sign up for a full course, you might find a more economical and productive solution would be to go for a short custom course. Some of the schools will do a custom tailored course for one or two weeks where you pick and choose what you want to learn. While you won't get VA funding for these courses, you also won't be paying for 8 or more weeks of school with a significant amount of that time spend covering stuff you already learned in the field.

Here are examples of what I'm talking about:

(scroll down to advanced farrier course)

I'm sure there are other schools that have similar options. It might not hurt to call and ask.

Here's the deal. I'm trying to keep it simple.
