I got my website up and running. www.thefarriergeek.com

Now I just have to figure out how to get it to help my business. Any ideas? Anything you would change on the website? (aside from my prices, LOL)

Pretty cool. I like the layout, and I like the way it lists youre services. Well done. As far as promotion, that is something I am struggling with as well. I moved to a new state not too long ago, and am struggling with the problem of how to get my name out their and build my buisness back up. I too have been thinking about a website, just not sure how cost effective it would be.
The harder I try the luckier I get.

Nicely put togeather site.

Just one observation/suggestion. There is to much RED on the home page, makes it hard to read the information. I think a softer color would be better.

I don't expect the website to do much in the way of drawing business. I think people kind of expect a business to have it's own website. To me it's kind of like a validation that it's a "real" business, and not some hobby or a part time gig.

I did the layout and everything myself, including the photos, so my expenses are almost nothing. The domain name is $15/year, and hosting is less than $10/mo through godaddy.com. I built the whole website with a free html editing program, and use a free ftp to upload my pages to the web. Photoshop was the only program I paid for, and you can get it at Wal-Mart or Best Buy for under $100. But there are freeware alternatives to Photoshop too.

I would certainly like to get business off of my website, but I won't be worried if I don't. I'm trying to get some link exchanges with local horse clubs and venues etc, but that's about the best I can come up with.

Thanks Gary,

I'm a little hesitant to mess with colors too much. I'm red/green colorblind, and don't like messing with color schemes. I may just drop the red, and leave all the pages the same, but I wanted a little definition to set apart the home page so it's not so bland.

Great content!!!

The red background . . . fingernails on a chalk board.

Now, what to do about getting your site noticed and having it appear in the search engines . . .
START HERE:> http://zensite.home.att.net/

My web site has gotten 2909 "hits" and 409 "visits" this month so far 12/12/2009. The "Contact" page has been viewed by 47 people. "Service Policy" page also viewed by 47 people.

I get several calls a month directly from my web site. It is in the top 3 or 4 links in most searches for "farrier delaware" on Google, Yahoo, and Alta Vista.

IME, Having a price list distracts from the rest of the content. I removed my pricing from my web site because that was all anybody was looking at. If they read the service policy, they will figure out that I'm probably more expensive than the last farrier. But if they just jump to the price page, then you never get a chance to DIFFERENTIATE your service from whatever else is out there.

Generally it takes 4x as long to trim and shoe all 4 feet compared to the time to just trim.
If your trims are $40, then your shoeing fees for a full set ought to be $160 and a half set ought to be $100. It is REALLY EASY to get people to pay that much and more. All you gotta do is ASK FOR IT.

Here's how - Every NEW client that calls, $160 is the price. Then each "new client" becomes a "preferred client." Anybody that doesn't sign on at that price is going to tell every other person they talk to how much you charge. Eventually the other farriers in your area will hear about it . . . which will give some of them the courage to raise their fees up to just below your rates . . .

I haven't pulled up your website yet, but I have a suggetion on the title.
Farrier Geek ? Drop the Geek..
Words are part of promotion. Positive or negative.
If you call yourself a geek then others may pass you by thinking your not experienced or serious.

I know computer Geeks is cute but its not the image you want to put out front with most horse folks.

my 2 cents worth ;)

Bland is better than obnoxious . . .

I would say if you are some what colour blind,
you should stay away from colours on the page background
My best suggestion if you wish to look PRO,
is to use the font Verdana, at "size 2" or "10 pixels".
Black font on a white background.

If you want colour, then use a coloured border around the page, but not to thick.
Just trying to help Joey.

Also remember If you are a novice website builder,
cheap cost to build mostly translates to, looks cheap.

Keep it simple, until you learn how to fancy it up.

Just think of how your first hand made horseshoe looked compaired to your work today,
and that is how your first website looks to a designer/public.
Not trying to be harsh, just real.

Good on ya for trying.

Joey, there's two things here and they are completely separate. One is the creative aspect the other is the technical side of producing a website. On the artistic side I can help somewhat. The colors are not comfortable to look at and the legs are facing away from the content and throw the readers eye away from the page. Bruce's comment re the "Geek" is bang on, and IMO it would be better to eat the registration site fee, than to be labeled "nurdy". It's not very professional sounding. The technical side, I'll leave for someone more qualified, that is probably everyone else. :D One of the reasons I left the commercial art world, was that those that thought because they could put a tie and shirt together, they were artists. Not the same thing. Get someone to help in the creative process.

Thanks for the input. I did drop the red background.

I'm gonna keep an eye out on aczon.com, but it looks like it belongs to a broker, and will probably be updated in the next day or so. It's likely someone is trying to hold it for ransom from my uncle though. http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Aczon_Edmund_14376399.aspx

Although, I've got a lot of positive feedback on thefarriergeek from clients and horse owners. The unique nature of the name has actually drawn business. It seems to peak peoples intrest when they hear it. So it may not sound appealing to another farrier, it seems to be well received by the general public.

Joey you're right about names that actually work even though they don't appeal to the professionals, e.g. "such n' such for dummies"
I don't understand it but who can argue with results, eh.;)

You might also put your service area more boldly, perhaps up near your phone number. Also make sure a search engine will pick up on searches such as "farrier Caldwell Texas"
A good website can indeed bring you business. For example searches for hoof trimming classes get people to my site as well as having it listed here under my name. Folks go there to see what I am about . Almost all my students have come from finding it in Google or looking from here. So there should be no reason that your site should not get you customers.

Another nice feature you might consider and your customers will really like is a newsletter on the site. Particularly let the world know about anything new as far as education that you are up to. Check out this site by a British friend of mine, Becky Mabutt.
Her clients check into it regularly, they love to see their horses there, see what she is doing lately, and they refer her to more customers. http://beckiemabbutt.squarespace.com/
