I came to Texas 3 years ago without any contacts. I'm just now getting comfortable. Stick to it, do your best on every horse. I'm finally getting refferals that ask what I can do, not what I charge. It definately takes a while. On average it takes a business in most any field 3-5 years to start making money. So try not to get discouraged just yet.

Where I'm at the "average" is around $50-60. But just about every one of them are 'whack n tacks'. I have yet to see a decent job that wasn't done by Maki at A&M, and that's the gods truth.

I'm getting $90 for average riding horse, (in kegs or plain stamps) and $100/reset on a TWH, ASB, or padded Arab etc. I'm also known as the guy that doesn't screw around, comes prepared, and is worth the money if you can pay it. So I think I'm doing pretty good for charging as much as I do, being that it's $30-40 more than most are used to paying.

As long as I can make it on Ramen, steamed rice, and coffee for a while longer, I'll do pretty good. LOL

Ollie,
I thought it might be helpful to mention the fact that this is a people business. You'll find that a handful of your clients will become close and more friends than clients. The rest will be "What have you done for me lately" types. As long as everything goes well, you're the golden haired boy, but heaven help us if you loose a shoe, horse clips himself or performance falls off for one reason or another,........you're gone. I like people and this disappointed me at first, but then reality set in and the realization that this occurs in other trades as well, mechanics, builders, painters etc. Our goal should be to satisfy ourselves in the quality of work we produce, and enjoy the moment, because you never know what's around the corner.:)

The Canadian dollar is similar to the USA and we have prices ranging from $130-$400 for a set of new shoes. Now if I could only figure out how to get that $400 price and not feel like a thief, I could live very well doing 2-4 horses a week.:D

I was at the 5 year point that I started refuse the occasional piece of work. At 7 years in business now I feel that the practice has finally matured. It just takes time.

There are lots of things you can do to increase your name recognition. I can think of a lot of great things going on in your area. Did you go to the Hoofcare talks in Saratoga Springs in August, the farrier/vet clinic a few weekends ago near Albany, this weekend was Cornell and the WCB was down in w.Springfield Ma at the Equine Affair, Next weekend is a VT competition?

How so????? Should work done on any horse depend on the cost of that horse or the requirements of that hoof?

Smitty, it's supply and demand as it relates to what the specific market will pay.

An owner of a backyard horse out in the country may rarely have the feet worked on. There's lots of folks around who can do an "adequate" job of it. We have Amish near by and they work real cheap...a religious thing, I guess. The supply is high and the demand is low so the price is low.

On the other hand if you have a barn (or area) full of big time, high dollar show horses owned by people with money, it's another ball game. There aren't nearly as many farriers who the market perceives as being able to do the work. The work MUST be done or the horse doesn't show. The supply is Low and the demand is high so the price goes up.

Within a given market, some farriers are in much greater demand than others. They get to charge more.

Certainly. If there's more money in a market, the market may tolerate a higher cost. Additionally, not all farriers have a reputation for being able to do all kinds of shoeing. "Specialties" often command a higher price because there are fewer farriers available and the market favors the seller.

I recently visited a local barn and the feet all looked pretty bad. Either they hadn't been worked on in a long time or the work just didn't look good. For our purposes here, I'd guess that you could lay a shoe on the ground with nails sticking up out of it and let the horse step on it and end up with as good of a job...or maybe take a shoe that's way too small out of the box, nail it on without any fitting and chop off everything that's sticking out.

But, I spotted one horse that looked to be well shod so I asked about it. It's the owners own "special" reining horse and she tralers out to have a "specialist " shoe that one. I'll bet she pays more for that.

To make more money, you want to be "the specialist" where there are lots of those "special" horses and not many other "specialists. Then you can name your price.

If I'm the John you're talking to, there's no trouble here, I've made a lot of money, enjoyed doing it, and haven't had to charge outrageous prices. I make on average $125-$200 an hr. with the normal prices that I charge, which is the average around here. IMO a very decent wage. :D
