The thread regarding helpful tips toward the AFA CF has been going very well so I thought it might be helpful to some to share tips regarding the Certified Journeyman Farrier test as I know there are several out there that are currently working on achieving this accomplishment.

Just to get things started I'll post my system for the shoeing practical.

Total time allowed : 2 hours (120 minutes)

Trim- 20 minutes

Forge & fit hind shoes- 20 minutes

Forge & fit front shoes- 20 minutes

Nail all shoes- 20 minutes

Clinch all four- 20 minutes

Fudge factor used during fitting, scoring, etc. - 20 minutes

The best thing about using this system is that it is much like AT&T, you don't loose your roll over minutes!

I chose to always make the hind shoes first because the hinds were the last feet I trimmed and were freshest on my mind and it usually takes a little longer to get everything fit up nicely w/ the quarter clips for me.

My shoe building system:

Heat 1: forge medial heel, break toe, turn branch, mark nail holes

Heat 2: forge lateral heel, turn branch, mark nail holes

Heat 3: punch nail holes

Heat 4: clip and clean up the shape and fit the foot

**Some people like to clip and punch in the same heat but this was just the way I did it. Also, on the hinds, I would heat the shoe back up a little before drawing the second clip, the fewer time you have to hit it the easier it is not to mess it up. Also, on the hinds, leave a slightly larger gap between nail holes 1 & 2 to leave yourself more room for the clip.

There are many other ways, but if there is one thing I have learned it is that if you show up to take the test without a system and a plan you will find it very very difficult to get done.

Philip,
why do you need 20 mins to nail on and 20 mins to clinch?

CFJ practical calls for plain stamps vs fullered?

Good thread to start Phillip.

It is important to go into this with a plan, part of that plan should include training, study and practice. Also good horsemanship.

Plain stamp is difficult enough. Fullering would make this test more difficult.

Smitty I think that was an error. 20 mins to nail, clinch and finish is plenty of time. Phillips times will leave 10 minutes for the unexpected.

Thanks Phillip for the thread. As I posted on another thread I am well on my way in the journey. The next time I go will be in January. I pratice several times a week and I time myself on everything. I even time myself on long it takes my to nail and finish keg shoes at clients barns(I don't let them know it though). As I go to clinics and practice sessions I will post on my progress. It's a good thing I don't have to woory about the written part. I past that last Feb. at the convention.

Like Phil said, no one should need 20 min to nail or clinch but if you divide it all down this way you'll have more than enough time in fudge factor if things go wrong. In my case, I had one shoe all done except for the clip and burnt it up, then I put a new piece in the fire and burnt it up too, but when I put the third piece in and finished it up I still had time to play with. When I finished my test, even with all that had gone wrong, I had 9 1/2 minute to buff with a sanding sponge. I sat down with 6 minutes left. It just helped me to get my hammer swinging faster and get those shoes done a lot quicker. As I have said in many other posts, I'm not good with being fast so I had to develop a system to get me moving quicker.

when you start pulling your quarter clips, do you punch both bubbles at the same time or draw each clip out seperately, start to finish so to speak

Live it! Don't practice, because when a NBA player comes back from an injury they say it takes a week to get back to game speed. Practice cannot simulate reality! Do it and show pictures on this website. Don't have pictures? Make some. Make your own system. Success doesn't com from success, it comes from failure. Choose not to make you CJF testing your practice session. Smitty is the best finisher on these forums, so people quit posting pics of finishing. I have gone back to the drawing board as far as finish goes. Failure is alright - it is where experience comes from. Once you get to moving at game speed you will feel like you are in slow motion, that my friend is experience and ownership of forging. Feel like you are hauling and things could derail with the slightest miscalculation - lack of experience (lack of failure) Funny thing is people spend more time trying to get around failure than just failing and going on.

If you keep sticking horses your nails are too coarse!

If you have speed bumps on the outside of the hoof wall your nails are too fine!

I don't know about down there but "profession" refers to Doctors,Lawyers and Professors, up here, if one is to be precise. Not being as learned, I could be mistaken.
