Way to go Jarred. I'd like to add my 'congrats' to those here for jumping right in there. As you know, I'm getting ready for CF in 2010. They usually happen in the fall anywhere close to me (14 hr. drive). What a learning experience it must have been.....

In response to a request from Mr. Reed, I am putting together a series of videos to cover the AFA CF shoe display. It may take me a little while to get them all covered, but here is the first one. In this video, I cover the square toe modification on a #1 Kerkhaert SSP. I will try to get the other videos up as soon as I can. Thanks and I hope some find these helpful.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-u7qxBLtlc&feature=channel

Nice demo Phillip. Difficult to hear what your saying with the music, it is louder than you.

If you used kegs, nail placement and fullering isn't considered so long as you don't crush or otherwise mess up a nail hole.(with the exception of your one nail hole to be stamped outside the fullering)

Is this true? I'm putting together my shoe board for my CF and the guide just says it has to be at or in front of the widest part of the foot, punched & pitched appropriately, and to not interfere with the physiology of the foot. To be honest I'm looking for the easiest/simplest way to get these modifications done, but I don't want to short-change myself.

Thanks!

It is my understanding that, when using keg shoes, the nail is to be stamped outside of the fullering. Note the accompanying picture in you guide as it will show a plain stamped nail. I could be mistaken in my interpretation of this, you may want to contact an examiner and inquire for more clarity. You can find their numbers in the AFA directory or call the AFA office.

The last update I went to said the nail could be punched in the fullering. But that one seems to change on a regular bases. I think the best thing to do would be to call the next examiner that you are testing under and ask him what is acceptable.

Good advise.

However, to be on the safe side, practice punching the nail hole where there is no fullering and remember that you have to provide the appropriate nail for that hole. Remember too that when you go on to your CJF practical, you will have to plain stamp the shoes for nails, so practicing and getting it right now will only work in your favor.

Thought I'd bump this thread back to consciousness. . . with fall coming on I know some folks were mentioning trying for various certs and I'm hoping to get started on at least the written for CF in the early months of 2011.

Looks like Phillip Box has put a bunch of his videos up on youtube, they're pretty cool to watch.

Thanks for everyone who put something down on this back last year, how are folks doing this year?

Love seeing all the pics! Playing around the other day wanted to practice a CF run. Far from perfect but I would like to hear where I can improve. I personally shoe more around COA don't do a whole lot of "true" perimeter fit but I will be going for a CF cert soon.
I think the heel length is a little long with more than allowed but expansion was good, I was going for a B fit. I also think my heel checks are way too long on the solar shot.
Congrats to everyone who has passed and good luck to those working on it!
First 3 pics are LF second post is RF.
Thanks for the input!

Nice work Chris! You are a little long on your length, they will get you for that. If your going for the CF, you don't need the clip's. Nails, and expansion lok's pretty sweet. Might try checking your heel's a little different. Easier to fit the heel's for this test.I don't think you'll have any problem. How's your shoe board coming along?:)

RE:Certification AFA CF 09 Oct 2010 01:41 #74

Thanks, ya I figured I would be long, kinda in between sizes. Someone told me to stretch a couple pairs so I have some in between sizes when I go to take the practical. I also heard to do as little mods as possible when shoeing the practical cause its just more stuff they can judge you on. True? How do you check your heels ? My first heat I straighten my heels (so its like a mule shoe) then knock them out of the way and forge my heels. Any tips on another way? Shoe board is coming, I have Chris Gregory's 3 disc set from hoof watch and I like how he says don't put a lot of useless "jewelry" on your shoes. Keeps it simple and practical.

I know I have my knowledge for the written down pat, maybe went a little overboard for that.

I think my biggest weakness is my practical, really working hard on the fast efficient fit. I watched a video where Dusty Franklin said its all just a fitting contest.

Any other tips? I think I am over prepared but better that way :D

Thanks

I agree with Dan you are a bit long. Do not use any hoof sealent at the test as well. The nailing looks good as well as the expansion. You will get jugded on the clips if you add any. Memorize the score sheet, otherwise looks great.
