RE:Certification AFA CF 03 Nov 2009 02:24 #46

I have been using Chris Gregory's "Better Basics, Better Horseshoeing" to help me with my shoe display. It has been invaluable. After what I have read here, I'm ordering his DVD from Hoofwatch......thanks to everyone for your input here.

Baron, how do you mean to take advantage of co-op membership ?

I've had a month to month subscription for quite a while and am waiting to hear from them in regard to my annual discounted membership, re-my co-op membership.

You should've heard from him by now. I suggest you send him an email to be sure all is in order. And you should also receive a 10% discount on all purchases.

Still tooling around with the board,

Do you guys build you trailers like you hockey stick a bar shoe?

No drift for my bar shoe, intern I had to city head fore punch and in order to get the depth right I got huge nail holes! Tool tuning time

Thanks,
Jarred

Jared, for the shoe board, I would hockey stick it back a little to maintain definition on your corner. But you have to bend over a little extra for this.
What the book says regarding trailers:
-The trailer extends laterally from the centerline of the foot and is longer
than the medial heel.
-The trailer is approximately as long as the barstock is wide.
-The modification maintains dimension of stock.
-The extension is appropriately boxed.

Hope this helps!

What should the inside of my trailer look like? I know clean corners look nice, so is what I marked better or is what I'm doing ok?

Jared, I just went back out to the shop to do this for you. In the first pic you can see where my "fit" of the foot would be and then you see a line coming from it down the center of the stock. This is where the trailer is measured from. You can see from the second pic that the stock is 3/4" wide and then the measurement of the trailer, from the fit, down the center is about 3/4". This is the way it would be measured. I turned about an inch and you don't necessarily have to pack it like a hockey stick. Just try to clean up your corner to give it some definition. It doesn't matter if it is a little rounded or a little boxy. It does have to be boxed on the foot surface and you can clean it up w/ a 1/2 round rasp and really make that corner "pop". Hope this helps!

Here is my fist run at an actual shoe board. I am missing my traction x2, nail hole, bar shoe, pad and raise of hoof angle.

I plan on working on the bar shoe the next few days, will be a handmade bar shoe 3/4 fullered with 2' wedge pad.

These shoes have not been cleaned up yet, need to address some heels and such and hit them with the wire wheel. But I figured before that I would take a beating.

Jarred, It's good that you're going ahead and getting started on this now. The more you practice these things, the easier they will get. I vividly remember going through a whole box of shoes in one day just to get one rocker toe that would pass. Everyone see's feet differently to a certain degree and it takes a long time to train you eye's to break the hoof up into quadrants and truly see the full shape of the whole foot; exactly how bold the toe is, exactly where the quarters begin, etc. Don't worry, you're not alone at all on this. But I will point out a few things that I see in your shoes that are going to need to be addressed before the final shoes are turned in. On your fronts, they seem to be a little too pointy in the toe. I see this a lot when people use the compromise keg pattern. Take the toe of the shoe over a large radius on your horn and make it bold and round on the first heat, this should give them more of a front look. There isn't really all that much reworking needed on the hind shape, they just need a little more definition and they are not matched up to fit the same foot. The shoes need to stack perfectly so as to be "made to fit the same foot." You're doing a good job not pinching your stock on the square toe, but it needs more definition. It really needs crisp corners. Same with the trailers and extended heels, they look to be appropriate length, but they need more definition. The trailer looks like it may be turned out a little more than necessary as well. Keep up the work and keep us posted as you re-do them. Best of luck!

I knew I was not ready for the CF but I went and had a go last weekend.

I turned in what shoe board I had, my bar shoe an trailer pasted. The rest did not fit the pattern, the bar shoe is 3/8 by 3/4 11 1/2" and the trailer has a sliver of bar stock jump welded in for the mass

I also did not pass the practical scores were to low but I did finish.
