RE:Certification AFA CF 16 May 2011 16:00 #181

Lori you did a swell job, putting up with all of us down there is sometimes a task! Having a system is a must! Things like if your down on time and fitting a shoe do you keep fitting for a ten or take your six and finish? I personally took my six and finished up my job and passed I could have fullered to he heels on my shoe and got a better fit but by the time I realized it I just need to take the licks and hope the better foot carried me threw.

As you know but some others may not you MUST know the book, but not only the book but how the Examiner (s) tester (s) and the AFA look at it. Things in the book matter some don't and then those little it should be in the book things!

Some things I have gathered from the weekend.

Even though the very first thing on CF says "open to farriers who have at least one year of horseshoeing experience" this statement does not matter.

The fit rule(s) do not apply to the extended heels and trailer (you will have more flat steel and should) Way over the 1/6th of flat allowed per standard, and any boxing should leave apporoximatly .5 the thickness of the extinction (shoe thickness) and angled 30/45 degrees (I dont remember what they wanted on boxing angle) And when it says stock with is not altered you cannot have it thicker or thinner (I was under the impression that thicker could be better but it is not)

They wanted my clips pitched more (even thought they fit my pattern feet)

Be careful with shoes with manufactured sole relief for the rocker toe. Because per the book The ground bearing surface behind the rocker is flat and on the same plane as the rest of the shoe.

Punched nail hole : Handmade shoes that are creased do not count for a punched nail hole. Nail hole must be punched outside ANY fullering in flat stock infront of the widest part of the foot.

I think Its a good idea to hunt for an easy ten or the easy points. Like getting the tester to agree that something should be left alone. Like this frog is in perfect shape already I think leaving it alone is best, If they agree and you leave it alone you just got your easy points! Remember that using anything in your hands can constitute that your touched the area! Don't own any area you said or where instructed to leave alone! Don't even use a sanding block or something!

Oh and my last things is True False questions SUCK! lol
I'm not a certification expert this is just what I gathered over the weekend.!

That's just silly! No sole relief on the rocker shoe but in the practical you get knocked down for not having sole relief.

Thanks everyone for all the good tips!! Really good advise. :)

I have really enjoyed the process and have learned things that I am now applying in my everyday shoeing. I think in preparation for the practical, it will help me become a better farrier, which is the point, yes? :)

I didn't expect to learn as much as I did in just two days, but every one was so helpful and willing to teach, that the rest was just the icing on the cake.

Jarred you guys were great, it was a blast! I am thinking about doing the Blue Lakes Comp. even though I will be going up against you and don't have a prayer!! LOL :D

Eric, IMO, you are incorrect only in your choice of terms. Its s-tupid, not silly.

Isn't it just a forging exercise to see that you can rocker a toe without altering the non-rockered portion of the web?

Hey Jarred, did you sit for the CF this weekend, I can't remember what Lori said? Can you clarify what you meant about the rocker toe? I read it as 'ground bearing surface' and the other guys are reading it as the hoof side of the shoe?? Or does ground bearing suffice mean the opposite of what I thought it meant??? :o

Hey all,

Yes I stood for my CF for the second time and missed the written by a few points and passed my board and practical.

I had a rocker toe done on a delta and Dennis Manning came and looked at my board on Friday and said I need to redo it on a shoe w/o manufacuted sole relief. I as you read the book to just say that the foot surface is clean and crisp.

One thing to add to the list of certification things that make ya go hmmm.

If an examiner doesn't follow the book, he is wrong. They can make mistakes like everyone else. However, pointing that out might prompt some to find another excuse to fail you. I don't think most are that way, but if that was the only issue, I would speak up.

But you passed your board and practical, so all is good, is it not?! You learn more from what you get wrong, I reckon, and I found the testers at mine, and it sounds like at yours too, willing to explain what they see wrong and give you a chance to show you can do it better. I had not done many pads before, and didn't understand what they were asking for fit with the pattern, but doing it as the practical really brought it home to me. I don't think anyone expected the work to be perfect, they were looking at if the work was tidy, correct and functional.

Congratulation Jarred, just the written to go - all you have to lug to the next certification is your brain! Make sure it's as full as you can get it. :)

Jarrred

Maybe you misunderstood, he probably wanted to see you make the rocker toe and the sole relief not taken away for you. Just like you cant use a pre-clipped shoe for your clip?

Speaking of lugging to the next certification...how does that work? If you pass the practical but not the written, can you redo it at another certification? How many chances do you have and does it work vice versa? I guess you gotta pay something like $50 each time?

After you pass the first section, you have two years to pass the rest. After two years you start over if you did not complete something. My exam fees were like $150. A certain amount goes to the AFA, and a certain amount goes to the place that administered the testing.

Thansk man. Is the shoe board part of a section or is it the third section?

Alan, there are four parts to the CF test. The written, the shoe board, the modification performed on site, and the shoeing practical.
