I moved this from the "Boy How time flys tread"

Norval, you have brought this up before so I have a couple of questions.

Keeping in mind that a farrier business has to make money to provide for a family which includes health insurance, retirement fund, etc. And like any other business has overhead costs associated with it, such as vehicle cost to include replacement, tools, equipment, business taxes, expandable supplies, insurance, continuing education expenses, etc..

What do you feel is a fare price to have 4 hooves reset/shod?

And why do you feel that way?

The market is key in determining what a shoeing is worth. What it costs to put the shoes on only determines the minimum it can be done for.

Frankly someone making $20/hour isn't likely to be in the market I do most of my work in unless they spend almost all their money on a horse.

Typical board is $450/month and I know of a couple places that are closer to $700/month. If there are training fees, it goes up from there.

Some of these horses are purchased for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A couple hundred bucks for a shoeing isn't such a big deal to these folks but I doubt many of them are entry level nurses.

Mike good points, but remember the greatest machine ever made is build by the lowest bidders, ie the Space Shuttle. They will have the highest price horses with $100,000 trucks and trailers and squeal over $10 on shoeing?

Have to agree with Mike on this topic. It becomes a matter of what the market will sustain.

Comparing the cost of shoeing a horse to boarding is 'apples and oranges' and provides no insight into relative value.

Same goes for Norval's comparison of shoeing cost to an individuals daily wage earning ability.

Norval expressed concern that a nurse can't earn enough in one day to pay for the cost of shoeing a horse. Using such logic, and keeping the cost within a wage earners daily salary, shall we use Bill Gates daily earnings as a measure of the value to shoe a horse? That should work out to a tidy $25 million dollars or so.

I'll take mine in $50 dollar gold pieces please. :D

Cheers,
Mark

I wonder...

why Norval didn't post the hourly charges at the facility where his wife works instead of her hourly wages?

if Norval believes the $150 shoeing price is my hourly wage?

if Norval bothers to declare the income from his shoeing hobby?

if Norval's wife knows, the prettier the horse owner, the less he charges?

if the prety young owner "flashes" him "by accident", Norval shoes for free?

An inquiring mind wants to know...

Hi all,

Guys, guys, guys, has it not occured to you that a guy who takes pictures of everything has only pictures of I think one horse. Also simple math will tell you that Norval's ridden 1/2 way to the moon over 40 some years of riding which make one wonder where he finds the time to shoe these thousands of horses he speaks of never mind the time he spends running down farrier work when he can't even make shoe. Sometimes things just arn't what they seem.

I want to know why some people can't afford a decent car to get their hard working self to their job, and others get to have a blown Corvette.
I should restate. Why is money taken from the poor, so that the rich can be given a blown Corvette?

The going price was $120 for a reset and I thought while high that was the going price. Now suddenly the going price is $157 for a reset. To me that is getting to high. I feel we have to take other peoples income into account. The normal working mom doesn't make near enough in a full day for a simple reset or one hour of our time so no I think the price of a reset is getting too high
Now for a winter package, 4 new shoes, 4 pads and borium, runs about $190 max but now the going price here is a touch over $300.
Even my wife a top of the pay scale nurse doesn't bring $300 home a day after a full day. Why should a farrier feel his hour is worth more then my professional wife's 8 hour day??
I have a feeling of personal worth but don't feel it is that much above everyone elses.
How would you feel if you had to HAD TO go to the dentist every 2 months like clock work and he took everything you made in a long 8 hour day and did one hours work?
My son runs and owns an honest repair shop, an honest one and he makes a good living off it charging on $20 a brake job per end, he feels it is a fair price for 20 minutes work and doesn't like ripping the public off.

So to me an acceptable price for a reset is $120 and I don't believe everyone wears out their shoes every 8 weeks and need new ones and about $190 max for a winter package.

Farriers have the horse world by the short and curls and I don't feel we should take advange of that fact. Without a farrier a person can't keep a horse and we know it. Well some of you do. I make allowances for what a person can afford.

I have a soft heart and give me a sad story and I will cut you a break. That includes everything I do in life.

My wife says I am a poor business man because I don't know how to charge

Entry level nurses?? My wife is at the top of a nurses pay scale with 30 years experience. Top of the scale is $44 per hour with no paid vacation or no paid sick time, just straight pay for hours worked.

Typical board here is $250 , $300 and $420. For $420 you get a new large arena and basically a new facility.
For $300 I get this

Why should a banker or loans officer get a 100 Million dollar bonus for screwing up the economy ???
Why is a pair of nike's a $100 and the poor smuk kid gets 10 cents a day to make them ???
