TOPIC: FAEP Symposium on the foot

FAEP Symposium on the foot 12 Aug 2009 23:23 #1

Last weekend I attended the FAEP symposium on the foot. I have to tell you all that this was one of the best hoof care symposiums that I have ever attended. Dr. Parks’ anatomy presentation was a standout with his electronic models demonstrating various impacts on anatomy via the basics of balance. Another major standout was the presentations given by our very own Jason Maki. His step by step outline of the conditions and the considerations in treatment were a real treat and should be taught to anyone thinking about shoeing a lame horse. Dr. Carter’s presentations were also spot on and I really appreciated his presentation on radiography.

The spirit of vet/farrier cooperation being fostered by FAEP in this series of symposia is something I believe we all can benefit from. Anyone that can attend next year really should make a solid effort. It was well worth the investment.

I agree with Ronald, this symposium was very informative. Dr. Parks was informative and entertaining. His lecture about ground reaction forces and functional anatomy was easy to understand and very helpful. Jason Maki was down to earth and straight forward. I was unable to attend the summit this past year, but I was certainly glad I made the trip to Orlando.

Thanks to everyone that put this symposium together, and I hope to see you all there next year.

Thanks, Chad

Chad that is great. What did you get out of it and how will you apply it to your everyday shoeing?

Hey Phil, sorry it took me so long to respond, I have not been on this site for awhile. I took several things from this conference.

The main thing to me was a better understanding of ground reaction forces. I knew more than I understood about this, and Dr. Parks went through it step by step in a way that was easy to understand. I don't think by any means that I understand it fully, but I learned many things that I was doing to help horses were not actually doing what I thought.

The presentation from Jason Maki was probably my favorite. I work on several horses that I cannot acheive a proper hoof pastern axis with a trim alone. He noted many ways to change the orientation of the P3 inside the capsule, and what support on the caudal part of the foot needs to take place in doing so.

Those were two of my personal favorites, but every lecture was well worth the time and money.

Thanks Chad
