The question stopped coming up when my fees got high enough that it didn't matter.

I don't have clients who would argue over whether or not the shoes are suitable for a reset. There's a long list of "less expensive farrier services" to choose from that includes almost everybody else in the sand pile except me.

Here's the deal. I'm trying to keep it simple.

I quit discounting for resets about 6 months ago, and haven't had anyone complain yet. Just got tired of people trying to argue with me about wheither the shoes were still good. Another policy I put in place is I will not reset another farriers shoes, I don't care i the shoes look brand new. Just saves alot of trouble and headache.

At a horseshow would you please ask the customer who shod the horse, and if it is one of mine let someone who will reset my shoe do the horse.
Thanks

I should have been more clear as a general rule I won't reset, however if it is a tack on for a lost shoe, or the shoes are set good and the proper size I make acceptions. Just the other 2 local guys either set them too tight for my liking or use too big of a shoe with way too much heel hanging out the back. Not saying they are wrong just that I don't do it that way

I had the opposite view when I was working for myself. I charged a decent base rate $100 to $110 for the work of shoeing the horse ( a reset). which on a horse I had done once or twice was 35 to 40 minutes of work burned in and buffed up. New shoes I would charge $20 a pair for the labor of making a shoe/making a keg shoe a shoe. I could do four new in an hour ten to an hour and a half. I itemized the labor on any extras-pads-equipak,bar shoes, drill and tap etc--I never did charge for clips . I actually made more money resetting shoes, but when they needed new I was atleat partilly compensated for my time and sweat.
Mine was not the greatest bussiness model, i drove 50,000 miles a year and worked six plus days a week, but thats how I did it I tried a flat rate of a 115 and lost money in those two months compared to the previous two---not sure why. So i went back to itemizing labor o new shoes

I don't know, I just reset another guys shoes for the first time a couple weeks ago. All I had to do was widen the shoes and round them up a bit. They were already boxed, safed, and everything. :D It's too bad there aren't more out there like him. ;)

On the rare occasion that someone asks me about it I explain to them that I have budget a price increase each year at least 4.5% in order to keep with inflation. I explain that I try to do this in ways that are not to drastic to any one client and that one year I was able to do this by charging the same for resets and not giving that 5$ discount. In all honesty, I have never given a discount for resets but about 25 years ago the guy that I apprenticed with did and this is what he did when he quite giving a discount.

Hah reminds me of guy I know. I was hanging out with him at a a big horse show in the area he works at. This girl brings him a horse with the thrown hind shoe. He asks who does the horse. She tells him, so he tosses the perfectly good (looked nicely worked) shoe on into his truck, grabs one off the rack and proceeds to draw out the two widest and ugliest clips I have ever seen. knocks it on looking and fitting like hell, charges her fifty bucks and sends her packin. Turns to me with an evil smile and says something like "I'll show that f@#%er how to shoe a horse". I take it he knew the guy...

Jason,
Hows it feel to not have to open your wallet when your restocking your inventory these days? :)

You've got a great gig over their Jason and you deserve every bit of it!
Its not for everyone though, I dont think I could stick to the regiment of a steady schedule I do not dictate. :)

I hardly reset anyone elses work. I will once in a great while, or if the shoes are the right size and type for the application I'll modify them to fit in the way I'd like.

I think 85-90% of the work I see is bunk. Short shod, distorted hoofs, curled heels covering most of the frog, poorly trimmed hoofs, buried nails. I see all kinds of **** over here just like everyone probably does.

When I see a good shoeing job, it really stands out. I've learned to spot certain farriers work by now, good and bad. I got one that always buries nails. I've contemplated calling him a few times. I dont know what to say though.

What really gets me is when someone brings me a horse with a seriously terrible shoeing job and says "Shoe this horse exactly like this" I nod and shoe him the best I can. They always say, this looks great. Even though the shoe is 2 sizes larger, front feet no longer look like back feet, and the giant bullnose has disappeared, its pretty much the same.
