I charge the same price for shoeing whether I use new shoes or reset. In other words, if I do reset shoes, I don't give a discount. I am curious as to what others tell customers when they say, "I paid for the shoes the first time, why should I pay for them again?" I personally have never been aproached with this but have wondered exactly what I might say if it did happen.

The other day I got to thinking I am going to change the way I say it:

"I charge $120 to trim and reset horseshoes,
and if a new pair is needed there will be no charge.
Just one of the perks of being my client."

In most cases, I also charge the same for new as reset. On the rare occasion that someone comments, I just tell them that I'd be glad to charge more when I put new shoes on if it will make them happier.

I just tell them that I charge for the time to clean them up, make adjustments if needed, and the new nails. I clean the foot side with my hand grinder w/flapdisk, touch up the boxing and safing if needed.

I say you don't have to pay for the shoes twice, just the service to clean and reinstall them if that's what you want. Or you can just pay for new shoes, either way the total comes up the same.

I dropped the discount for resets about a year ago. Nobody really noticed, but it was only $5. Actually, I rarely do any resets anymore with some exceptions.

I tell customers they are paying for the service not the shoes. If they question further I explane that the difference would only be about five bucks. That seems to satisfy them.

I do discount the cost if I'm resetting a specialty shoe such as an egg bar as I charged them for the cost of the shoe on the first shoeing.

I charge $100.oo local area new or refit standard fit up telling the client so prior to booking
I put on them what I think they need and if the shoes needed are expensive I as in dearer that the average set in the truck /stock Ill ad that and anyother costs incured , pads packing seedy toe treatments , meds ointments etc and let them know weather or not travle charges will apply most folks are agreable yeah

In a reset my customers do not pay for special items that cost extra the first time, such as the cost of pads, aluminum shoes etc. If the original shoeing was just steel shoes, then the reset costs the same as a new set.

I do charge less for refits ,and always have done..
The thing is thinking a bit ,hardly any get refits ,well maybe some oldtimers..
We have alot of forest areas and everything has been tracked out with well to say the least not Hoof friendly tracks...its hard on shoes and even harder on barefooters..

Why would you not charge to reset pads??
because they already paid for them once. It takes me about ten seconds to remove the pads from the shoes to clean the shoes up ....no big deal. I do charge for the new hoofpacking.
