I know most farriers wait to long to raise a price than one day get disgusted with themselves and raise the price 10 or 15 bucks to make up for 3 years of not doing it , then everyone freaks out. I once met a very well known farrier at his shop and this topic came up he said he raised his prices twice a year, 1dollar in January and 1dollar in June his reason he claimed was "no one cares about a buck". And he felt it was keeping in pace with his expenses. While I dont subscribe to either practice I think somewhere in the middle is the answer. And while I like Daves plan, My brother in law works like that. I feel it is important to charge the same for all your work. I charge the same price to the executive with e helicopter in the back yard that I do for the weekend warrior who is deciding between me and the mortgage. You can never assume these two wont compare notes a horseshow.

Who cares if they compare notes.....every account is different....isnt it conceivable that one client has better horses, better facilities, is half as far away as the other one, pays on time, has been a customer for many years, tips every time, can provide a full days work every 5-6 weeks, etc, etc?...all of these factors need to be taken into account when pricing your work

I agree with your one point.....I don't base prices on how well off a perspective client is, and I have some from every end of the spectrum

To not price your work to what the market will bear is either subsidizing someone else's hobby, de-valuing your work, compensating for lack of necessary skills, or just plain poor business....pick one :)

You are right, I guess I should not care. I was just making the point about charging people according to how well off they are. I dont discount any work and am already charging to the high end of what my market wiil bear. and to avoid any price charts that factor in conditions, length of time I worked for you, quality of the coffee you bring to the barn, My fees dont fluctuate. That being said I also assume that most farriers want to work in the nicest barns with the nicest horses, These barns are usually, not always, owned by the people with the most money and are accustomed, not always, to paying well for services. In my experience these are also the people who really hate being gouged, and they usually have been. So I go on that principle, if I choose to shoe to little ponies for the county fair, they pay what the big boys pay. I think its just easier on me, but your right I should'nt be losing sleep over it.

I have a couple of battlers dear to me I look after a little when working out the bill
Ive a couple I barter with

The price is the same for everyone ealse doesent matter who you are or what you do , I have a set price for a standard job and extra fee for anything above that
Im the one who sets the price , I let them know before hand where I can on phone or on site and the client is the one that either desides wheather or not they are happy to pay , if they are I do the job , if not someone ealse does

I didn't mean to imply that I charge my wealthy clients less than I charge my very wealthy clients. I simply stagger my rate increases. First, the price goes up to "new" clients. Then in a few months it goes up for my regulars, then it goes up for "new" clients. And so on and so on. I don't care how much money someone has as long as they pay me what I ask. I have a one person I barter with, I shoe the horse, she cooks me dinner (my wife). Sometimes it takes a few extra dinners before mama's pony gets shod, but it gets done all the same. :D
