Well, so do I. But they don' work for me for EVERY application.

Wow! Who knew?I guess that all these years I've been a wimp. This should come as an interesting bit of news to those who know me.

Patty,
How does displacing steel from the inside foot edge to the outside foot ege cause a shoe to "lose Weight"? The material, thus mass is the same, the metal has just been moved to a more appropriate location!

The removing weight comment was in reference to this statement perhaps I misunderstood it ....sorry if it was confusing. Patty
Rick,
When you hammer up your shoes, I am sure you make at least one pass on the foot side to releive sole pressure, even if you do not think about it. When you grind weight out of a Ahab the Arabs' toe weight, the logical place to take it is from midline to midline, seating out the shoe, but it was probobly already seated...

Wayne,

Jeez,,, I thought the title of this thread was Fees? :
My prices in VA are:

Trim; $30(min)
2 Shoes Fr; $70(min)
4 Shoes; $95 (min)
Clips; $7 (pr)
Flat Pads w/packing 24 (pr)
Behaviorally challenged horses $40 (per hr)

I hear that these prices are on the low side up here in N VA

Thats pretty much the basics, (min) is meant for bare shoes nothin else on the package. Very rare I do just Kegs.
NBS shoes are more as well, Yep I use em (at times). Hooked up a customer's horse just fine using the NBS and some sound advice from Patty (Thanks again Patty)

Hi all,

Seems to me a lot of farriers have somewhat irrational and arbitrary pricing...

For instance, it's not uncommon to see someone charge something like $35 for a trim, $75 for front shoeing, and $100 for all 'round...

This means he charges $40 for the first pair of irons, but only $25 for the second pair.

What? Have y'all found a deal on hind shoes that I don't know about? Is somebody giving away some kind of nail that works on hind feet only? Maybe you've got clients who never clean the hind feet, so you don't have to put much effort into doing a decent-looking job back there? ;-)

Then again, I've seen a few guys whose price structure is such that they charge *more* for applying the hinds than the fronts.

Just wondering...

Dave,

I guess I'm guilty of that type of pricing as you hit my prices pretty close.

I charge $34 trim $75 Fronts $105 Full set

This is the Way I justify it

$34 trim
$10 lifting the anvil out and setting up
$30 front shoes
total $74
I like easy numbers to add up because most customers say no when I ask if they need a reciept
Total $75 Fronts

add the extra $30 for the hind shoes
Total $105 Full set

If you could shoe all your clients horses on all four feet you would'nt need to do too many horses to make a good living.

So I would rather price those Fronts a little more.

Thats why the price of a trim is more than just 1/3 the price of a full set.

Because of the fuel prices I'm buying a new map today
I only travel in about a 40 mile radius from home but rarely west.

I'm going to draw a circle at 15 miles out and 25
I'm planning on charging a fuel charge of
$3 per stop between 15 and 25 miles and
$5 per stop over 25 miles

Price only in affect untill the price drops back to $3 per gallon
I just raised my prices on april 1st and hate to raise twice a year so maybe this will be accepted by my clients better.

Full shoe: $110
Half shoe/trim hind: $80
Trim: $45
4 clipped shoes: $25
1 pair pads: $15
Packing: Sole pack by the pair: $5, Dental Impression: $20
Sliders: $130
Alluminum Fronts: $20
1 pair bar shoes: $40
Drill Tap: $25
Borium: $20
Drafts/full shoe: $275
Drafts/full trim: $80
Trip Charge: 20 - 50 miles= $20, Rarely travel over 50 miles.

I live in Douglas county Colorado and have only been here for a year, so I am about mid-range for my area. There are some well established farriers who are getting between $120 - $150 for a basic keg shoe job and $55 for a trim.

Hi,
I currently charge, $30 for trims, $80 for fronts, $120 for all four and charge the same for resets. Being that fuel prices are so high I just started giving a $30 discount for places that supply me with a full days work. The $30 is what I curently charge for an extended area farm call. I hot shoe all of my horses and don't charge any extra for clips or any needed minor shoe modifications even though their are many times I feel like I should. I charge $10 for any specialty shoes such as aluminum, natural balance shoes, etc. per pair. $60 a pair for bar shoes. $35 for pair of pads which includes standard packing ( Forshners and Oakum, or Silicone) Equi Build and Pak are $50 per pair. Borium, Studs, etc. are $30 pair.
In the 3.5 yrs of shoeing I have changed my prices numerous times. I try to avoid nickel and dimeing people. I am now charging enough to make decent living, however the more horse I shoe the more I feel I'm not charging enough.
A good farrier friend of mine had a really good theory on prices and that was when he had more work than what he wanted then that was when he raised his prices %10. He says he always got rid of the clients he didn't want and would always still have the good clients.
Good Question. I always enjoy seeing what prices for shoeing are around the country.

I am surprised at how similar the responses are to the question. Most are within a few $$$$ of each other. Apparently the $50 a horse guys do not post on websites(probobly because they can't afford a phone or cable line, let alone a computer! :D )

I was always told that theres a need for the cheap guys because they will shoe the horses I dont want anything to do with. But then again I've heard of places around that if your getting $50 then your doing really well. Some places even less. I fell sorry and dont see how someone can live charging that little. When I first started shoeing I thought I would be cheap but it didn't take long for me to relize that this is to hard of work to be cheap. I've always set the trend around here for being expensive and most of the time it dosent take long for farrier friends of mine to catch up.
