TOPIC: Does anyone have barter agreements?

Does anyone have barter agreements? 02 Aug 2005 20:05 #1

How common are barter agreements with farriers? Does anybody have long-term agreements to exchange services with clients or do you only entertain one-time trades?

How receptive are you when clients offer to pay with something other than cash?

It is tough to make bartering fair - because you really have to line up the needs of the 2 parties. I guess that's why cash was invented - so you don't have to barter.

I am just curious as to what arrangements other farriers have.

I have a standing arrangement with a trainer for shoeing in exchange for riding lessons for a family member. I enjoy a good barter and I am very receptive to trade offers. I'm not allowed to trade for farm animals any more
I've swapped for equipment, tools, and materials on a one time basis.
I try to take one day at a time -- but sometimes several days attack me at once.

I barter with one of my clients who owns a tack shop, but that usually ends up costing me more than I make! :) I also had one customer offer me a horse for a years worth of shoeing, but I didn't want to end up being her slave, so I didn't do it. I might with the right customer though! :)

Bartering can be good , but you have to pick the persons to enter into this system as you both have to be honourable , and stick to the quidlines that you BOTH SET AND UNDERSTAND
this is imperitive
Ive bought a ride on lawn mover that was a good deal for me We,d set the cost of the mower in real$ and also what my work was worth and how much work I would provide then shook As the folks were a little down on their luck I extended the deal in their favour by refusing their last two payments which amounted to an extra couple hundred I payed them , no big deal it was easy for me and a big help to them

I had a very ordinary experience prior to that and it tought me well to follow the above guide lines in setting up the deals
Ive just picked a an old subaru wagon as a first car for my doughters boy friend and we set the rules here to
Im not buying the car and givine it to the lad , haveing it will help him gain independance and gain work ,hes a good kid and well worth the giving of a hand , he will pay me back the money when hes able
this deal should work well for the three parties concerned yeah:)

Ive met people that Id never consider entering into barterinf with , be carefull in choseing them :)

We barter quite a bit. The shoeing trailer were using right now was bartered. We just bartered for a new shoeing trailer. We have a client that owns a repair shop and were bartering with them right now, we have another client who owns a transmission shop and we've bartered with them before. We also have a client who makes natural fly spray and we barter with her all the time. I do think you have to be careful, we had a trainer a long time ago when we had a repair shop, before I became a farrier, who we bartered training and show expenses for repair work on her car, truck and horse trailer and she really ripped us off!!!!!

I have a client who has fallen on hard times. He will work on our place when his horse is due to be trimmed. There's always something needing fixed or done on this place so it works.

I do barter with the right client. Off the top, I have a pony for my kids from this. I bought another clients horse but felt so bad about the outrageous deal I was getting that I threw in $400 worth of farrier work with stipulations on who could use it if her next horse turned out to be a jerk I didn't want to shoe. I also bank work with a friend who takes my three dogs and stallion for me when I'm on holidays. When I'm getting more than one holiday ahead, she pays me.

I have done it a couple of times and both did not work out very well in the long term because we did not do a written contract and there were misunderstandings about the value of the services being traded. Just because you are trading it does not make it worth less than if you were retailing it.
One was to trade shoeing for cutting horse riding lessons. The trainer was only giving me the rottenest rudest horses in the barn to shoe, andthe lesons were intermitant so I quit.
The other time was for chiropractic services witha chiropractor who was part of a larger pratice.
Over time I KNEW I was not doing enough shoeing work for him (he only had one shoeing and two trims) to make up for the value of the chiropractic that I was recieving , and kept asking for a statement so I could settle up the difference and he kept saying "don't worry about it."
Then all of a sudden he left the practice and I get socked with an $800 bill from their office.
When I explained that I had this aaingment with the former chiropractor they knocked the bill down to nearly nothing and aplogized. They found out he was doing that with a bunch of people....his contractor, lawn guy ,pool guy you name it. The lesson.... decide on the value of the services to be traded and get it *in writing* before hand.

Why in the world would you need a chiropractor? What did you do to strain your back?

(just kidding)

My Vet and I have traded services for 20 years. He has anywhere from 4 to 7 head and most are on steel. I collect wormers one trip, he does my West Nile and Coggins, I have 12 head so that is a big hit. And I can always get him in emergencies when the public can't. Plus my dogs and cats get their needs taken care of. Heck he's even stitched me up more than once, plus x-rays so I feel I trade out good. Gary

Oh, on that note, I give a 15% discount to any vets I work for and write it as a "professional courtesy discount" on the bill. I've received free spays for my cats and had a horse stitched up here and there with no farm call in return. In the end, I think I've come out ahead with all the vets but then I did work part-time for a very well liked small animal vet for a number of years and it didn't hurt that everyone knew that as well. When I run into a vet who isn't fond of working with a farrier, I mention the vet clinic connection and things have always gotten friendlier right away. Whatever it takes to make the team work.

My mentor barters for meidcal and dental says it almost as good as having health insurance. He also has done several others such as the shoeing truck, horse traler and riding lessions for his kids. Works out good for him.

I also barter with the right clients. I have gotten 2 horses out of it and plenty of tack. I have a client who has a feed store I get my feed for all 6 of my horses for trade. It does pay off but when your in need of the cash it smarts sometimes and doesn't seem very benifical. Cause that client is like dead space but when your horses are hungry well.....
