hey guys,
Can someone tell me how much white lightening I need use one a foot? It says a ratio of 1:1 with white vinegar on the label, but not how much is enough to use. I was thinking about a cap full? I bought a bottle back from the US and we can't get it here so I don't want to waste it. I'm very keen to see how it goes.

Also, can you suggest any ideas on good bags to use? I went to the local hospital yesterday for IV bags and they said they might have one next week?!! Which is great, because I have 3 minnie donkeys with advanced white line disease all round, so I should have enough bags by Christmas time to treat them! Lol. I can try other hospitals out of the area, but would be happy to buy some if only I knew where to look.

Any other tips on use or expected outcomes most welcome. Thanks :)
Rachael :)

Rachael, i havn't used a lot of white lightning so some of the other can tell you better how much to use. i used 3oz's of both WL and vinegar for a TB horse. it's the gas it produces that kills the WLd.
Anyway it works well . as far as a soaking bag what i do is take 3 glad freezer bags and stuff one into the other to make one thicker bag , then i put a bunch of duct tape on the bottom to toughen it up. stick the foot in it and tie it up with some baler twine , or tape or vetwrap.
it's worked well for me the few times i used this method. hope this helps.

Hi Rachael. Just got done doing a treatment With White Lightning on a Icelandic pony(small hoof):) I measured it out with a syringe every time used about 35 ml per treatment. I figured as long as I a little pool in the bag it would work and it did.

Regards,

John

Well I measured it good and careful, followed what directions and common sense I could find, and am a bit miffed. Is there supposed to be any reaction when you put the vinegar in? Is the gas a visible thing? It just looked like water doing nothing to me :o. I told the customer to do it every other day for a week thn twice a week after that. What changes might it effect? These donks are in a right state and I was quietly hoping for a miracle. Am I expecting too much?

I Used 20 ml of each and even this small amount nearly covered the whole hoof in liquid, is that normal/ right?

That's what worries me about it. If the infection is quite deep, it would take quite a while to know whether its working or not, no?

If it's not, the WLD will be marching along gobbling up more hoof.

the gas does the trick. Your about right on the mix, I use 5000ml bags and duct tape to soak. All you need now are half rounds, a dremel tool, and some Mersol. Whiteline cant live thru it.;)

You can use the solution no matter how dirty it is on more than one foot. I bag'em pour in the mix and tape it up. Then slip the bag off one foot and onto the other if more than one foot is affected.

The debriding of the affected area works wonders even without any treatment.

Thanks guys, I guess we'll have to see how it goes with time. I've debribed all I can. 3 donkeys - 2 are pregnant. 2 feet unaffected, 2 feet debribed and fine, 8 feet debribed as best I could and going for the soak. I would say some of those feet have maybe 30% attachment left unaffected by WLD and that can't be comfortable.:(

Thankfully they are not the wild beastie type, they are exceptionally good to work on. Stuffed if I'd go to so much trouble if they were trying to kill me in the process.

What's mersol, Tom. Or are you joking? In this case, customer is going to run out in a week so I must find more. I can order it from Nz, but I'm wondering if I can get sodium chloride cheaply via some other industry here?

No joke. Merthiolate is no longer manufactured in the USA. Mersol was the brand name of the Merthiolate that was distributed by Marjorie Jansen as a product used to fight WLD fungus. I believe Burney Chapman was the one who discovered Merthiolate appeared to be an effective deterrent.

Last time I spoke to Marjorie she told me that she was shut down and could not get anyone to produce the stuff for here anymore - long story, big government, politics, yadda, yadda, yadda.

So I bought as much if it as I could get my hands on.

You live on an island surrounded by salt water. Surely there is someplace you can get free access to the ocean.
