I have one of the Police Dept. retired horses. (just recently resigned as a full time mounted officer in lieu of shoeing hence the moniker)

Speaking to my farrier it was initially thought he had Laminitis. The city did not pony up for Rads and just retired him. He is a 7 yr old QH paint gelding. He has on and off signs of lameness. Will run in the pasture then suffer for it the next day. On the off day he takes on a semi laminitic stance, but at times is showing the complete opposite. He loads the opposite fore fully when grazing by tucking in one leg to graze like a foal. He will also Lay down more than typical horse.

My farrier has not seen him since his retirement. I live quite a ways out in the woods. lol He has speculated that it could be Petal Ostitis since the feet do not represent the "normal" chronic Laminitic.

As soon as I can get the money, I am going to get Rads done and figure out exactly what is going on. The horseshoeing school wiped out my funds. I wanted to have the impression material on hand if the Vet deems that to be necessary. I bought a few Redden style Aluminum four point rail shoes while I was in school.

Unfortunately I've not got a barn built yet either to be able to stall him. This was more so a situation where noone wanted the horse because he was deemed "not able to be ridden" and I had plenty of land for him to just be a pasture pet.

Wouldn't there have been swelling around the pastern or fetlock joint? I'm just trying to feel a little better about him just running around. :o

Hi just a few questions.
How long has it been lame?
Is it shod or trimmed?
When was it last trimmed?
When it is lame out of ten how lame is it, ten being a broken leg?
Is it only one hoof?

Can you post pics of the feet and stance.

If you suspect a pedel ostitis ,your Dental IM maybe too hard .
A harder pad with a softer IM with protect from pressure from stones outside effects on the sole ,a soft IM will help relieve pressure from inside the hoof capsule a little .

On laminitis cases it's important with a solid Type of IM to keep the front half of the hoof free of any pressure at all using the solid IM as a passive support system under the frog bars and heel behind the tip of frog about 1,5 cm (ca)

Try and not over fill under any pad as sole pressure may increase as the sole grows in some cases causing secondary lamness to the end of the shoeing period .

I am back to Hemp \Tar (magic cushion) as filling under lots more cases theses days and can only say I have a lot less problems than with the 1,000000 different high tec stuff on the market in the last 15 years ...cheap and just as good as far as I can see so far .

How long has it been lame?
Since 2004, came up lame after being left for a week at a farm with super rich grass pasture turnout during the hurricane. Suggests Laminitis and from what I can remember he was shod with a heart bar and pad combo.

He was still ridden intermediately, perhaps once a week as he was not a regular assigned mount. He never fully recovered and retained that choppy movement in the front end. Would not refuse to come in the Barn on the concrete and at times still trotted (of his own accord not forced). The choppy gait was still present. He was finally retired in 2009 and went initially to my Dad's land. He was left barefoot at that point, trimmed cautiously by me on irregular schedule.

Is it shod or trimmed?

Trimmed on irregular schedule

When was it last trimmed?

Hmm well sadly enough I'll have to admit that it's been around 4 months now or better. Went through Divorce and all the horses got put on the sideline. I know bad. I've since moved out onto my Dad's land and went through the Farrier school so hope to rectify that.

When it is lame out of ten how lame is it, ten being a broken leg?

I'd have to say no more than a 3/4 on the worst day judging by his movement.

Is it only one hoof?

Initial presentation was definately both fronts. When walking with the choppy gait after playing around I can't distinguish one as hurting more than the other. The curling one foot under to graze like a foal appears to be the RF every time I can recall.

Can you post pics of the feet and stance.

I've been reluctant due to the fact he's been neglected in that dept. for a while due to my circumstances. But I figure seeing how he's growing out at the moment might be useful. I'll try to get some pics if the rain clears this evening or tomorrow. He is walking fairly well right now so I suppose he's behaved hisself while I was gone.

Ok the feet actually didn't look that bad to have been neglected that long. Would love to say it was my previous trim job. lol Most likely strong feet not prone to cracking.

The only thing different for this horse since retirement is that I let him drop a little weight believing he was Laminitic. He was a tad overweight. Also he has been left barefoot. I do not know that if the weighing less has helped or what. But I videoed him today and I could not get him to limp or get the choppy gate I've previously seen.

How do you post a Video?? lol

Here are a few shots of the left fore foot. On the angle shot it appears that he may have articular ringbone? Just guessing as I haven't got rads yet.

Ok Here are a few shots of the right fore foot. On the angle shot it appears that the fetlock is a bit low or at least the angle is too shallow. And OMG where is his frog???? What would that be from? I don't remember going over something like that.
