Came across this the other day. Arab/WB/TB cross. Owner has tried to barefoot her for the last few years. Not a real success. Would appreciate some ideas on how to handle it.

What were your thoughts on this Mal. Whitline looks pretty healthy too me.

How deep is the seperation in the hoofwall?

Looks like some deepseated shoes for a cycle or two would do the trick.

Glad I don't have to trim feet that hard:D

I've got a similar case on my books, and IMO the only way to treat and prevent further seperation is to remove all affected hoof wall. The horse I do is barefoot out of necessity (no viable wall to hold a shoe), and wears comfort pads and boots when turned out and ridden.
He had been shod poorly for many years, and the previous farrier just ignored the seperation, and when I took the horse on, I just couldnt get a shoe on it.
Driving nails into it will only cause more seperation in the long run IMO.

I agree with Chad. I don't see the white line being too crumbly in the pics. Looks like you used your knife to debride the white line on the front left and it looks ok.

If the owner is concerned about a white line disease i would do a clean trax soaking once its all trimmed and opened up and talk to them about shoeing to prevent cracking

I am wondering if it a genetic problem ,something missing..
I say this because I have a Highland Horse on my books that has the same thing ,not as dry as yours ,I have him in order with rasping the wall at 45° angel as oftern as possible ;But as soon as you think your winning the whole thing starts to break up again..

Last time i had one like that i cleaned out the white line area like you have . then i poured some powdered copper sulfate in there , then cover the copper sulfate with some forshners hoof packing(flush with the sole).you could use hoof felt soaked in coppertox. then nail the shoe on .
the hoof grew out real healthy after 2 settings like this.

it looks like thoroughbred brood mare feet that i work on.horses are too large for the size and quality of their thin walled hooves.on those i remove all the excess curled up wall and use equicast.if you trim it short enough, the wall comes down tighter and straighter.i dont know the health of your horse, but as these i work lose weight their feet get better.-g

I was pretty succesful in a similar case. I forged out a quarterclipped shoe cup wise (sounds like a lot of work, but really isn't, just tap away on the inside footside of the shoe) no need to overdo it, and fitted HOT, no trim, really burn in the shoe. Shoeing at short intervals like 6 weeks or so. You'll find that you need to trim every other shoeing. Usually on my horse I only need to correct balance rasping and go back to hot fitting.

Did him for years and it only got harder in summer, but was always ok.

Thanks guys for all the thoughts:) Ended up putting a wide webbed heartbar on with some equipak CS under the shoe. mare was much happier afterwards and chased her paddock mates off the food for the first time in months. Owner is kicking herself but very happy. Booked in for four weeks and will re-evaluate then.

Chad was a good inch deep up the front wall.

Really appreciate the help everyone.

One idea more,Mal:

Get impression material two components. Mix one with cooper sulphate.

Put in hoof a hot shoe. Do not trimm, only burn. Then mix the other component and put in perimeter hoof. Then put the shoe. Do not make pressure. When the impression material is hard, nail the shoe.

Two cycles of shoeing and the hoof will change, trust me.

I forget: Make in the shoe four conic holes for the MI.

This case could be interesting for nylon base shoe and steel or aluminium shoe screwed.

Hey Mal!

Use a small propane torch to lightly toast those hard feet before you begin using your knife. They will soften up! Hope this helps!

I vote genetics as the reason for those poor feet.

The horse has suffered mild toxicity laminitis some time back .hence the dropped flat retained sole & excessive sole growth that has taken place. Most likely cause over feeding of mineral supplements to toxic levers . Most likely offender excessive iodine ,which interacts with the thyroid & adrenal glands & interfering with Hormone levels & regulation, namely thyroxine & triiodothyronine. Resulting in liver damage occurring. You will see this take place in horses feet that have been feed kelp on a regular bases by the foolish that have listen to someones advice to feed it to horses. That person recommending it be feed having no understanding of chem or physiology. Ask the owner has she been feeding supplements & what type .:)
