absolute rubbish ,if you prepare yourselve before you start the process does not take long . mark where you are going to cut , the vet sedates the animal get down and get in there and get it done . no stress involved . its the faffing around talking bull and complaining how difficult the job is and how good you are that stresses the animal

Well Good Morning to you, Chris! Faffing around ... well, no vet there to administer tranq. Soooooo -- it was what it was and it is what it is and will be just what it will be. And we deal with what we've got.

PS .... Vet or no vet. If extreme trim renders the animal unable to move then the purpose is defeated. I want that animal to move with her herd. She's not standing in a stall all day in a fluffy bed of shavings. She's out in the field with her herd mates. She needs to move.

there is nothing macho trimming a donkey in one trip. the vast majority of farriers are organised and dont have time to mess about , they are practised in what they do and get on with it . all the rubbish a bit at a time is a waste of vtime ,it had serious problems to start with so dressing the feet properly in one can only be good , less stressful standing correctly and in most cases like this a lot cheaper for the owner

Why do people keep critters when they don't/can't take care of them !?!?! Here is what I worked on today. Not a perfect job. Little jenny was so patient but getting so tired. The worst hoof, the white front, will get trimmed some more in the next couple of weeks. Didn't feel comfortable doing much more than I did -- it was obvious that her hoof was VERY tender.

Notice the MASSIVE metabolic fat mess AROUND her neck !! Not just the crest -- but the fat encompasses her neck and all over her body. She and the other two donks are on a huge field of 90% c.l.o.v.e.r. !!! I left strict instructions to cordon off part of the field, rip the vegetation out of it and make it a dry lot. The larger of the donkeys is also building up a adipose neck. Hooves on the others not as bad as this little one. We'll tackle them next time, too. Owner has committed to the next appt. in 3 weeks. Hopefully that won't change. It had been over 2 years since this jenny had been trimmed.

I wish I had had a hacksaw with me today. I daresay I'd have used it! But -- only had my regular tools so nipped and rasped away diligently.

Any suggestions for that white hoof? Trim pics in next post (reply)

It is called ANIMAL HOARDING; whether it is one or hundreds; and the owners can not and will not part from an animal; no matter the circumstances.

This is a real problem here in the USA and around the world.

Hi Gwen,

This seems to be an appropriate thread to post these pics. Last horse of the day, new customer, nasty surprise. Took me about 45 minutes, charged the regular price. It just made me feel good to help the giold girl out. This horse, a TB, belongs to new horse owners. Purchased the horse about a near ago. They thought you only called a farrier/horseshoer when you needed shoes. One of my clients clued them in. They want to be on a regular schedule, they say. We'll see. I set them up for Nov 5 trim next time. Anywho, Pictures:

Exfoliated sole (as deep as I could reach with my knife ) Picture doesn't really show it, but the hoof is about 3 inches deep, wall to sole:

Pretty nasty frogs, I did clean them up some, but there wasn't much to work with, so I trimmed the tags, Kopertoxed them, and hope to see better next time. She was very tender about them. Also, had to set the foot down (in the mud) before the "after" solar shot. It was actually to live sole every where, even though the picture may not look like it. I should have wiped it off and taken another, but when you're up to your A in alligators.....,

Regards

Funny timing! I just got off the phone after confirming the next trim day for the little girl donk ... :) and then saw your note come in. Will be seeing her on Thursday. Reportedly doing very well with no tenderness at all. Kewl beans! So maybe Thursday will finish up the job. I'll take photos.

Great job on the TB! Yeah, it does feel good to be able to help, doesn't it. :)

Thanks for sharing!

From this:

To this:

After first trim she was not sore at all and ran around with the rest of them like she hadn't done in a long, long while. Here's a parting shot after I got trimming (the other two donks were always RIGHT THERE in my face watching over "Tulip" -- just making sure she was 'safe' with me! haha)

Off they go! Yipeeeee! *LOL*

Nice job Gwen.
I have done tons of donkeys/mules/jacks throughout the years.
2 at Shelburne Farms looked just like this when I first took them over.

My friend if you are comfortable doing the job in two visits then do it in two visits.

I used to, but with age (my own), I have cut the time down to one visit and do what is necessary.

Your final trim pictures are right on.

Donkeys in many cases are neglected because they jerk their legs so much faster than a horse and reputation makes most farriers wary.
It also has to do with the size. Many farriers shy away from mini's and small horses/donkeys. (for the life of me I never understood why)

You did the donkeys a great service and yourself proud.

Keep up the good work my friend.

I would remind others that each person should work at their own pace and within the boundries of our own experience.

I have always told my apprentices/ride alongs, to work for quality and not worry about speed. That will come along as your confidence-knowledge-and quality progress.

Denise !!! I moved to Florida (Ocala area) and am building a new business out of the snow belt.
I will miss all of you folks.

my 2 cents worth ;)
