Rick....How would you pick a path that's "safe"? Hitting a stray capillary tend to freak out the owners. Care to mark up the photo with that path you would take the saw through?

Stay well away from where you want the toe to end up. Just saw off the obvious wall with no sole under it. The live sole won"t go out anywhere near as far as those walls do. Then use your nippers and rasp to finish. Not sure How to draw on the pictures, and not sure I'd want to without having the hoof in my hand. Maybe someone else is braver. You would probably need to post a pic of the hoof bottom . Just go by where you would end up using your nippers. I've done this quite a few times and it's not really scary after the first time.

Shane,
Thought about my last post. Maybe not helpful enough. You could easily take 2/3 of the front of the hoof of without getting in trouble. At that point you could probably see how much further to go with your nippers. You'll be amazed at how well the hoof will turn out. last month I did one similar to this on a Standard bred that hadn"t been trimmed for over 2 years. The hoof was almost normal when finished. Will be normal when I'm done two weeks from now ( I was conservative out of consideration for the horse). Good luck.

Regards,

Rick

Well I didn't use a hack saw and the poor guy isn't where he needs to be yet, but it's a start and maybe they well be regular about it with enough hounding.

Here are the after photos guys......

Good job but way too conservative. You could have taken of way more. Be sure to reschedule in a week or two. I wouldn't worry about the customer too much. I cases like this (very rare in this part of Europe) I'd worry them about somebody seeing it and filing an abuse charge with the police. When they realize that's a possibility too usually they don't worry about a drop the charges.

This is neglect pure and simple, but not necessarily with mean intensions......

Shane,
Nice work, however I had the same thoughts as Mr Aalders - you can go a lot further. On the other hand changing the angle too much at once can sometimes bite you. But in a week or too, fix it.

Seems like this is your first time on a case like this, so I commend you for giving it a shot. Too little is probably better than too much;),

Shane,
Here is a thread where the "before" hooves were very close to what you started with. http://www.horseshoes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11564 Paul did an exceptional job on those hooves. Unfortunately, I think he has left the forums (probably due to the nasty way some folks here treated him :()

Don't make assumptions Denise that is not the reason he left.

Good job Shane. You've left yourself something to work with and should revisit that pony within the next few weeks . I hope you pencil whipped the owner(s) until they cried "uncle". Regardless, if they put off having you work on the pony again, when they finally do call you, make sure they know that it is going to cost them plenty for you to come out and trim the pony.

Shane,

Have a look at this album.

Not an absolute reference, but a proportional guide for reasonable toe length - Take the length of the frog (from turn at heel bulb to apex) as a guideline for toe length (from coronary band to ground).

In case like this it all depends on the owner and their ability to take responsibility. But it looks like you have it under control, very nice work. I have found it to be way less stress on the horse to lay them down when their hooves get to that point, but good job man.

Had a pony i trimmed last summer looked like that but prob a little worse, horse couldn't stand when I came over the first time so I trimmed him on the ground. got him nice and short next time I came out and went to do the pony in 6 weeks he was running full blast away from me. Now that makes you feel good, but then when I tried to schedule the owner every 6 weeks he said he didnt think he could afford 30 bucks every 6 weeks and he would call me in about 6 months. That is the first time I have ever cussed a client out and told him to find someone else. You will see a lot of this kind of stuff and unless you want to hound the clients to keep them on a schedule they are going to let them get that way again.

I trimmed a lil guy who looked EXACLTY like the pony in these pics. same colour feet in identical state. the owner tells me she used to be a farrier back in the dayand took some test i never heard. didnt have the folding saw with me so it took a long time . Furthermore she wouldnt let me trim anything off the heels. then the ****** lady feeds him half a bucket of oats as i stand there at a loss for words. and on the way out she shows me her guinea pigs walks over to this rotten straw bale with a window leaning on it and 2 emty feed/water dishes (ps this was a -25 degree celcius canadian winter day and guinea pigs are tropical/indoor pets) saw no signs of life obviously and she says "oh maybe the halks gottem". managed to book another appt. and stop at the liquer store on the way home.6 wks later i drive all the way out (obvious crazy lady live in the middle of no where) and surprise shes a no show. from the truck i see the poor pony laying down. obviously suffering. Tried phoning her, 2 weeks later i called the SPCA. normally i try to turn my head and i dont always agree with the SPCA but the entire situation was sickening and this woman truly was a farriers worst nightmare.
What would you have done?
