Showed up at a barn today with a horse that was "tender footed" here she is.

I did what I could to support the foot and remove all the black from the affected and not make the owner scream!

Any advice?

Take Care

Nice job. Only thing is that patching these things can cause them to go south in a hurry. Time will tell.

I agree with Rick, I would of used a full eggbar and left the toe area open. Closeing it with all the new products on the market gives the nasties aplace to hide and breed.

Agreed w/ the above and also you said you tried to get all the black out; once you get all the black out, you'll notice, if it is WLD, that if you keep going a lil farther you'll reach a white chalky textured material and that's the real bacteria, the black is usually just dirt and debris(use your imagination as per what debris could be) but debride all the way until you run out of the chalky into healthy horn and as was posted above, I generally leave it open, closing it can harbor allow it to really get out of hand due to it being anaerobic(not liking air) I always tell the client to keep the area clean w/ a wire brush and open as oxygen will kill the bacteria. However, as I said in a post in "Everyday Shoeing" the other day, there could be circumstances when I might consider filling it in if the client had no clean, dry place to keep the horse up in.(horses living in the mud bog on the back 40 or in "the pond pasture") Obviously I would want to take extra pains to make sure I have gotten rid of ALL the bacteria and then some, sterilize the area as best as I could w/ clean trax or white lightning , etc. (you will probably have to allow time for the foot to dry back out b4 applying a patch) ; protect the lamina w/ play dough or something to prevent it getting heated and abscessing from the patch product's setting heat, and as Mr. Hill added, I would prefer a whole shoe, this will not only further stabilize the hoof capsule but it should also protect the white line from further intrusion of foreign materials. Good luck with it, some of these WLD cases will go the other way as soon as you think things are getting better. Hope this helps.

I would have given this horse full support rather than an open toe.It looks like you have filled the toe with Keratex wax which i have never found to be very effective against white line disease, also you seem to have filled the whole toe with it when the only part that will be working is the part next to the wall.

The horse lives outside in a nice muddy wet pasture with hardly a place to get dry. I thought that for this horse covering the area would be best? no? I did use Keratex I treated the area with thrush buster and then applied the Keratex. These are the things I had for this animal. I tried my best to remove anything that was loose gunky or pasty from the area regardless of color. I wanted to be more aggressive but I think the owner will not likely fallow threw with what I asked of her. I told her to leave the putty in until the rain stops it was supposed to rain a few days in a row, then pick it out and wire brush the area and treat with white lightning or the like.

So before next time I need to get better at forge welding and make a straight bar or go with an egg?

Hi Jarred
My thoughts here would be that this foot is a grade 2 to 3 club foot based on the angle of the coronary band in the photo. This could be the cause of the WLD as you will have separation of attachment of the laminae on the dorsal aspect of p3. If you do not address this conformation default with either shoeing to alleviate DDFT pull or an inferior check ligament desmotomy, you could keep debriding that area for the life of the horse. A lateral radiograph would answer all these questions.
I find it as important to find and rectify the cause in a situation like this.
If this is not a club foot, my apologies

Derek,

Here are a few more pictures for consideration.

Last photo is of the other front, I didn't think I dubed the toe but it sure looks it in the picture.

Thanks,

Jarred
This is a hard one without radiographs as it does look broken forward. Do you have any history of an old abscess on the foot that erupted at the coronary band and grew down, broke away and then filled with crud. It looks like the clubby conformation and living environment drove the crud right into the wall junction. It will need support on the front wall either through a goosneck application or debride thoroughly, clean and fill it, keeping solar support until it has grown down. If you don't it may battle to to heal through the instability at the toe.
Good luck
