No one has the right to treat anyone like a punching bag.
I think you have to consider that most of your clients are female. If most were male, it wouldn't be called emotional client. Emotion is not bad, but using it as a weapon is not tolerated-from anyone.

What I wanted to say to you, Slow Shoe, is that you should never take anything from a customer, no tips, meals, cards, NOthing! Because now you will feel like you owe the client-something, and it will make her feel like she has the right to abuse you because she's given stuff to you. It's a bad situation.

My first farrier told me this. We had discussed this at Christmas time. He would not take tips, gifts, cards, food, drinks, anything. And we had a very nice relationship for 19 years.

So think about the things that might make her feel that you're obligated to listen to her ranting, and the things that make you feel obligated to her.

So Karen, when you tip someone, do you feel that they're somehow obligated to you? I don't. When I tip someone, I look at it as a thank you for good work, or extra effort. Is it a male/female thing? I wouldn't accept a tip if I thought in any way that I was somehow subjugating or obligating myself to the tipper.

Do you give tips to your doctor, lawyer, CPA, or dentist?

I would if they weren't such arrogant SOBs, and they all charge too much. :P Except for the CPA. I have tipped him before.

I receive a lot of tips during the year. Many even tip in the $20 - $60 range, clients regularly give me farm raised eggs, water and vegetables out of their gardens, I give and receive a few cards at Christmas. I send cards to sick clients throughout the year. Never been a problem. I don't feel like I owe anyone anything but a professional service.

I'm not against tips, veggies, cookies, etc. It's a nice gesture unless someone thinks she has paid for the right to dump on you. Like you were supposed to be grateful in her mind.

Cody, Rick, would you accept anything from someone who thought they could slam all your work?

Depends on the client one has. None of my clients expect anything in return, they are just being who they are... kind and nice people.

I take the same position as Cody in both of his last two posts.

I only work for nice people, and I am happy to accept whatever is offered. Refusing a gift can be insulting to the giver. Think about it.

Still have not seen what the client wrote. I bet he's just being overly-sensitive.

I think the OP is being purposefully obtuse. Apparently there is some bizzare situation he/she encountered it wishes to address. Making that an across the board defamation on accepting tips is unrealistic. People accept tips all the time and incorporate that into their relationships in healthy ways. The OP either has unhealthy relationships with those who provide paid services to her horses, or else takes tips she/he receives personally.

Tip giving is a healthy, acceptable, normal and important part of horse business. The OP is missing out on social niceties and regular professional relationships to insinuate accepting tips obligates one unprofessionally.

Maybe she thought the pool boy should have put out after xmas last year. Or, maybe she was the pool boy, and didn't. Heh heh.

My OP was directed at Slowshoe. HE should not take tips from this woman and make her think that she has the right to use him as a whipping post.
Since Slowshoe posted this dilemma, I believe it was because he might have felt some obligation(?) because of her tips
.
That is why I said he should maybe not accept tips (from anyone?) BEcause he's such a nice guy, and doesn't want to say anything to anyone that tips and makes him feel uncomfortable . It was a suggestion to someone who is maybe too nice.

Those of you who read more into this may be able to read, but not comprehend what I said. And Inyureye, you have a terrific sense of humor! If you are reading all that into a post of mine, it can only be joking or s-tupid, I'll choose funny.

And perhaps maybe you've had a bizarre situation with a pool boy??? I'd love to hear more about that. They made a movie a few years ago about 2 cowboys..............................
