Tom, I know you previously declared you hate all things social, and maybe new, but the old VBulletin is gone unless you want to go back to the end of December. And then I just don't want to go through anything like that blackhole toolkit virus again. The reviews of the new VB are horrible by the way. The company has lost most of it's developer talent per Eric and is in a downward death spiral. And the new site offers many new good things if you want to use them and if you don't you obviously still can post and poll and do everything you did before. So whether you want to stay in the past or not it's time to move on.

Steve, A lot of functionality has been lost. You could have kept that functionality, and perhaps with time you can regain it by customization. But when it comes to navigation and ease of use, this is not an improvement.

Adding the social networking is not a bad idea, but it also is not what generated the tremendous traffic this site had in the past, the forum did that. Thus you are speculating that the added social networking functionality will increase traffic above what you previously had. That is not a bad decision. But it shouldn't have cost your user community in the process. I don't recall seeing so many complaints about navigation on the old forum. As forum user interfaces go, this new one is primitive and significantly less intuitive than what you had.

You've lost forum participation. As long as folks are frustrated with using the forum - especially those who made this site what it is by their participation, your key business driver is going to decline. As long as that continues, you're vulnerable to competition.

I lost forum participation due to the crashes and moves to ever larger servers that took more than a week to get done, during which the site was down or unusable and participation was difficult, frustrating, and sometimes impossible. Everyday we are gaining registered users back (yesterday we hit previous vb levels by the way with over 100 registered users logged in). As users get comfortable with and discover the benefits of the new site we will grow again and move forward. I sure would appreciate support during this, it's been very expensive and stressful between all the malicious attacks and the technical issues - and still a lot to do to finish the site. Your suggestions regarding things you would like to see me work on/improve going forward is always appreciated as long as reasonable. I know you lean towards a glass half empty view of the world but there is a lot of cool new functionality in this new platform. A poll like this just does nothing positive for us.

In the late 70s I got a LED calculator, took me a while to understand it but I did. Since then its been a roller coaster of electronic stuff that I have tried to master, and to some degree I have, except the clock on the central heating that is still a mystery to me and as the teenagers have no use for it I am not expecting any help from them. I discovered that my relience on these gadgets has been driven by others and the need to be in touch with others, compare my black berrie to my first LED calculator and you have the picture. So things evolve and some arnt happy, God knows I got told I was a bad request again today and I was furious and had to take the cookies out of the jar again. The site is visited by many who are after info and to listen to the ramblings of old men, Im sure in a few months time when as with all the other stuff I have finally got the hang of Tom will be still entertaining us with his doer wit and baiting of forum members that have made me smile before now as I enter this virtual world to escape the television and the reel world.

I had a Motorola Razor phone. I ran my schedule on it. I could synchronize it with outlook or outlook express or run the calendar as a standalone application on my desktop.

My next phone was a Pal Trio 755P. I imported my calendar and contacts with no problem whatsoever. I could move contacts and appointments back and forth between my windows address book, outlook calendar, and the palm desktop. Like the Motorola, I could make appointments on the phone while on the road and synchronize them with my desktop.

Then Verizon made "improvements". No longer could you plug your phone directly into your computer and copy images, sync calendar, contacts, etc. Now you have to do that through the Internet, and PAY for it. If you get a "feature phone" instead of a "smart phone" or a web enabled droid, etc. you can use the built in calendar, but you can't synchronize it with your desktop and can't share contacts.

So they took standard business productivity features away that were useful, efficient, free, and totally compatible with desktop based industry standard productivity software, and replaced them with a bunch of cool stuff that doesn't do anything for productivity but gives one a bunch of unproductive fluffbunny wannabe techsavvy stuff to do that you have to pay to use and doesn't contribute any profit to your business - but makes a lot of money for Verizon.

Some day they might try building a mobile phone that actually is a good PHONE. But, talk is cheap, the rest of the social stuff is where they make their money. Smoke and mirrors. Ohh look shiny! Please enjoy the music while your call is dropped . . .

Steve,

The feature I miss the most from the old forum is the ability to log on and be able to choose to view only the posts I have not yet read. I know we can choose only posts since a point in time, but a lot of the time I I have to guess how long (exactly) since I last logged on, and if I didn't finish reading all the stuff last time, I have to re-sort through the ones I HAVE read. Also, I have to scroll through all the posts from the first one in the thread to read where I have left off. Maybe there IS a way to do this that I haven't discovered yet :) If there is a way to do this like in the old forum, "new posts" being only the ones I haven't read, it would go a long way towards making the new forum easier to navigate.

(I also miss the "preview post" function).

Hang in there my friend.

Rick Shepherd

I think the fact that no one has ctually polled here is indicative of the support you have for the new site, Steve. It is frustrating, but new things aren't ever perfect from day one. I can't even imagine the conplexity of what it all involves, so hang in there Tom, it will smooth out soon.

I just feel very lucky to have even found the forums in the first place. It is a wonderful, free resource. These changes aren't costing me wads of money and the forum is not imperative for the running of my business - it is jus a fun pass time that i learn a whole heap from. I too havae to long on a-new every time i come on here but i did find posting pics to be a whole lot easier than i remember it being in the old forum. Is there a chat room yet? I havent found it.
Rachael :)
