This is what I'm seeing every time a page refreshes. It feels as if Ads are taking the place of content. :(

Eric, yes, you can zoom into the ads enough that they fill your screen, at the zoom level I operate in I can always see the tabs and such with no scrolling (but I know everyone has different needs due to their particular vision needs). The reality is I need more advertising due to the cost of the site, which is high. Users generally accept this need for advertising given that their experience is free (users do not pay to use this site).

Due to issues with Joomla, it is necessary to take you to the social page when you log in (jom social is the level controlling the user's access).

I hear ya on the Ads Steve. I'm just letting you know my user experience.

Agree that advertising is necessary. Don't agree that all of use this site free of charge. Some of us have paid a co-op fee for a good number of years! It's not entirely ad sponsored.

Also understand that Joomla requires login access to the social page BUT... user familiarity and experience is HIGH on any developers design criteria. The INDEX page is what most users already know and want easy, intuitive access to. If the "Forum" tab on the social network page actually took the user to the same page as the Index tab, much of the early confusion would have been avoided.

People thought (some still do), that the "Forum" tab actually takes them to the forum they know and love. Nope.. it basically drops them on the "Recent Topics" page, which can be a bit confusing to some.

Worse, just before this afternoon, the forums tab used to take us to the "Profile tab" page. This is why some were complaining that when they selected the forums tab, all they saw were a list of their own posts. That has changed, with the forum tab now basically pointing to the "Recent Topics" page. An improvement, but still not what people are looking for. They're looking for their "old forum". Basically, they're looking for the page under the "Index" tab.

Cheers,
Mark

understood about the Index navigating Mark, see my reply to your previous post on the other thread. Try bookmarking and see if that helps you go straight to the forum page after login. was told it will but have not logged out to confirm. fyi, co-op fees were primarily pass throughs, to provide additional benefits to users. no significant cash flow for the site, but I still appreciate members like yours loyalty. again, without the advertisers there would not be a forum site.

Since Steve has 10,000 emails to sort through, LOL, I'll post this here.

The login does not need to redirect to the profile page. I haven't played with Jomsocial in a while but since the login on the forums also takes me to my profile page, it's either set to take me there in the shape5 template options or the jomsocial component options, possible the jomsocial module options also.

Login to Kunena.org for a perfect example. If you login there you can also see how much easier on the eyes a lighter brackground is. B)

The index menu tab can easily be changed to whatever name you want. Since you already have a menu called forum at in the bottom menu, you'll have to change a couple menus around then copy it.

Both of these are 2 minute jobs.

I love the background of course but always willing to look at suggestions. I'll see what we can do about washing out the photo to lighten it up. We will see what it looks like.

I'm using adbloc and am finding that effective.

At least I'm not getting all the nonsense you're getting and which clearly does totally spoil the user experience.

It's easy to install if you're using Firefox.

Steve, We were in email correspondence way before I even knew you were looking to change the forum and I gave you feedback about my experience as an ex Forum Owner.

You know I understand the requirement of the business model to draw advertisers. However that can't be to the detriment of advertisers or forum users. Too many adverts and folks don't even see them! Or else they'll do what I do and use blockers because they find they interfere with what they're here for and they won't see them. That means that the advertisers will not increase their revenue from being here and if they're business savy they'll drop the advert next year because there's no return on their investment. Ultimately without the members actively engaged making purchasers there'll be no advertisers.

If the user experience is poor then folks will reduce the time they spend here.

I don't know what you did in terms of UAT but it's obvious from the posts etc that there's a lot of criticism and things that folks would like sorted.

Might be a plan to get someone, like Eric on board, even at this late stage and do some UAT and particularly from a user experience perspective.

But while I'm at it... some more to add to the list:

I had to log in again today even though I'd clicked all the normal boxes to remember me. (Particularly frustrating for me as I'm sure you'll appreciate because you've had to give me a new user name which I'm struggling to remember!)

The PM reply box is too small.

I sent a couple of PM's to others yesterday but they seem to have ended up in my own inbox

I'm also frustrated by the difficulty finding the "forums": particularly if you wonder away to a profile page or to the messaging bit.

In an attempt to improve everyone's experience (since my intent was always to improve everyone's experience) I've reduced the number of ads at the top. I've changed the forum link back to go straight to the main forum index from the pull down forum link under community (it was only changed to help server loading but the server seems okay so I think it needs to go to the full forum to make it easier). I've increased the font size for users to see when typing their posts. We will experiment with lighter background images (either washing out this photo to lighten it or go with a plain light color or something else). In a few hours when my designer is awake we will go through other suggestions and implement what we can. We need to concentrate on finding/disabling the spam bot so we can open back up registrations. I am sure everyone is ready to post more about horseshoeing and less about how to operate in the site.
