makes me smile to tell you our new machine is the fastest server at our host, has 8 (eight) cores, runs at 3.2GHz per core (xeon), was built around a week ago, and has raid 1. and is fast...

Steve,

Why can I get on the website if I use IE but with Firefox I still get the "Unacceptable" error message??

Xeons (very pricey) have a very large high speed memory cache to keep up with the greater I/O demands.

Raid 1 is mirrored drives, theoretically faster on reads because the system can read to fill data requests from either drive at the same time - but only if it has an "intelligent" controller. Raid performance sucks on SATA controllers, but it rocks on SAS.

Seems to run pretty snappy for sure, almost as fast as my desktop @3.3GHZ. :P

I'm running IE 8 on WinXP. Seems fine. Not getting script errors as before.

Have you tried Chrome? Seems it has overtaken Firefox in popularity.

I'm on firefox, not errors, Rick you need to just log out completely, go to tools, clear cache for timeframe everything or whatever they say and try to get back in, seems smooth in FF right now, very smooth

Steve, I normally hate it when websites have too much colour or large pictures as it means a slow download. But this is quick. Only complaint so far is in order to read what I had just typed I had to put my glasses on B)

Ok it took 12 seconds for this form to load when I hit the "reply button."

That is faster than the previous server, but compared to Vbulletin (the old software) the response is still very slow. Also compared to the previous interface, navigation in general is much less efficient. Now every time I post, have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the end of the thread. I suppose I could reverse the order posts are displayed as a work around, but in general the entire top half of every screen is filled with stuff I don't want to have to work around in order to see what I'm trying to focus on.

Also, every topic where I post, the checkbox defaults to "notify of replies to this thread." So if I don't remember to uncheck that box, my inbox is filled with emails for every reply to the thread. I haven't found any global settings in my user profile to change that default.

WYSIWYG ISN'T. In Vbulletin WYSIWYG actually was the real thing. Now when I hit a button to insert a link or an emoticon, I'm looking at HTML code. So from my perspective this interface is a step backwards in regards to user "friendly" OOB behavior. AND there is no "preview" button. So as far as forum interfaces go, this one doesn't stack up to Vbulletin.

I belong to several other forums that "upgraded" to this same interface. Fact is, I seldom visit those forums because they have even more stuff at the top of the page to scroll down through to see the forum content. Bottom line I just don't want to participate so much that I feel like putting up with the inconvenience. YMMV.

Site speed's not horrible but for a big website I think it's a bit sluggish.

I really hate this dark background image though. It hurts my eyes after a short time.

The site is no faster or slower for me.

Took forever to get in!

Getting masses of error messages on Firefox and it's been a total pain in the butt!

I can't see a darned thing I type in the message box! Way too small!

Is there a way to find new posts since you last logged in? If so then where the heck is it!?

Is there a way to find posts in the last 24 hours ? If so then where?

Can't stand the dark background and all the hot coals stuff everywhere on the screen.

Finding navigating round the site VERY different to anything I've personally ever seen before.

Can't figure how to embed a photo in a post!

Can't automatically get to last read post in a thread! That's irritating!

Couldn't see private messaging easily and still haven't worked out how to send someone a PM from their profile!?

Also can't figure how to search for a forum member???

Editing your profile is much messier than it ever was in terms of just doing a simple edit. Way too many clicks!

Trying to complete my user profile and am getting a bizarre error message "The field 'Address' contains improper values" ..... done that after several attempts! Didn't do anything different though!

I was looking forward to getting something better but so far if it is better, it's nothing to do with "user experience"

Where the heck is the guide for dummies????

Have to agree with a good bit of what Tom shared. Overall performance is good but speed wasn't a significant complaint on the old vbulletin based forum either. Much of the appeal of the older software was it's relative simplicity and base functionality. Some of that has been lost.

Looks like Steve changed the default "Check this box to be notified..." from on to off. That helps and will prevent email from being overwhelmed.

BBcode appears enabled but it isn't obvious and the lack of a preview option and wysiwyg is a significant fail.

Default text size while editing is much too small. Looks like a 6 point font with no obvious way to alter that.

A feature of the old software was the cached "last read" capability. Click on a forum thread and you would be taken to the last read post in that multi-page thread. Do the same thing here and it defaults to page 1, post 1. You can select the last pages listed but if you don't remember where you left off, you'll find yourself scrolling up/down or through multiple pages to find the entry most recent to where you left off.

I suspect that a lot of folks will retain some confusion between the forum stream in their "social network" and the actual forum index. I understand the intent is to blend the "facebook like" social interface with the forum interface but I can also see how this will be confusing to a good number of people. As Tom suggested, the user experience is probably not as favorable.

The new site looks nice and does offer a lot of new functionality. My concern is that the complexity and loss of some of the simpler, old capability will be a turn off to a lot of people. Case in point... Bruce Matthews immediately noticed he could not easily find access to his personal messages and Smitty appears more than a bit frustrated at finding his way around.

Bottom line... from a perception perspective. Vbulletin may not have been the latest/greatest forum software but it offers the user an incredibly simplistic and highly functional content management capability. Reminds me of the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Facebook is facing similar user feedback with their new "timeline" interface. I have yet to read a favorable response to that change.

The good news is that people adapt and eventually accept. Just hope you don't lose too many in the process. There are some incredibly talented contributors that frequent this site, but their talent is focused more at the forge/anvil than the keyboard.

My strongest recommendation would be two-fold. First, fix the default text size while in in edit mode. Second, if available, offer a preview button for the edit window.

I appreciate the work, the investment and the effort expended in bringing this new interface to the forums. Like anything new, it's a matter of growing pains.

Cheers,
Mark

It sure is small isn't it!

Finding navigating round the site VERY different to anything I've personally ever seen before.

I agree, I feel like I have to read a book to figure out which menu will lead me to the forum.
Can't figure how to embed a photo in a post!

Right below this message box is the attachment box. Click the add file to add a pic. Or to embed an image click on the green square 2 to the left of ebay.
