I saw on another forum, populated mostly by trimmers, a post that has me scratching my head.
Then you have sound horses that can be off when their feet seize up (IOW's, b-e-c-o-m-e l-e-s-s f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e), too much from becoming overly dry (hard as rocks). This can prevent the hooves from absorbing shock and lead to coronary bruising from the concussive forces

Anyone have horses whose feet seize up? If yes, what is the science behind this? This is a strasser type trimmer and I think her fix for seizing up is to take out bars, bars and more bars so that the feet get "flexible"

I have seen laminitic horses who became more comfortable by taking out some sole (out here in Arizona) but for the most part I see dry feet being sounder than wet feet.

Thoughts?

Kim,

Don't be so coy. :D Here is a link to the discussion and lets give credit where credit is due. The individual staking out that claim is none other than our own Barefoot Tree.

I am not a member of that forum nor do I intend to join because its bad/hard enough to deal with Tree, let alone a bunch of DQs...........

I should have know you'd be on the up and up. Yes Tree has claimed that she has to trim sole/bar because the hoof has "seized" up. I was curious if anyone else had ever heard of such a thing.

The cr@p the blood trimmers come up with as excuses to carve out the bottom of the foot never ceases to amaze me.

And yes I understand the not posting thing, I've basically quit posting as nothing will change their minds.

Ho hum :)

Kimmy, you ever seen the guy from the Swedish hoof school trim a horse? He had a hoof pick/brush tool he had removed the pick and put a short knife blade in so he could get immense leverage to dig out bars. I watched him trim a horse there in Picture Rocks and he dug until the wall went straight down and no bar was visible. Looked like two holes where the seat of the corn should be. He mentioned much the same thing. He had to release the hoof, it was bound (instead of seized) up. All I could do was cringe with each stroke of the blade.

I'm glad I missed that Ben, I might have had to jump on him and pummel him in the act :D

Tree has been asked to provide scientific documentation about this "seizing" up but instead she and her cohorts duck and dodge the questions.

Really there is no changing their minds, I just feel sorry for the horses. Where do they find the owners who allow this stuff?

The term I heard used was hoofbound.... the remedy was to get some moisture in the feet. It only stands to reason.

The first I heard of it was from that discussion. What I've seen, lately, is a dirth of collapsed hooves from this ... gotta get full frog contact BS. That means taking heels down (yep -- I've seen blood on some photos!) to where they're pretty much non-existent so horse is weighting on frog and heel bulbs - no heels at all; bars right down with the heels; forcing an arch to the hoof in the quarters with 'scooping' the qtrs out and voila -- hooves are so painful in a couple of days after this type of trimming the horses can barely walk. People have had their horses in 'rehab' with this garbage for some up to 3 years! One horse has just 3 mm of sole left. Foot totally collapsed with the trimming he was getting. Almost a year of dead lameness. Owner was being told that 'it takes time'. BS! P*sses me off no end (except that I'm getting more business out of it.) ...

When I read Kim's post I immediately thought it sounded like Anne Tree Coley's nonsense.

I think I'd rather poke needles in my eyes than read her stuff there!

Not sure if it was in the Lungwitz book ,but I have heard of cases of the hoof capsule breaking because of dry conditions ,the same produces a hoof that reforms from top growing a hoof with a different form contracted ..
ie when horses came from the countryside into the city as cab horses .
