Ok so I am studying for the written CF test using the Study guide written by mr Blombach. I have posted this question to him and I don't have an answer yet, but was wanting to run it by you all and see what you thoughts are. I am shur some of you have seen this so...
Exam A
Question is: The accessory seasamoid bone normally bears no weight? T\F
Answer is ..... False.
I am having no luck finding the accessory seasamoid??
Are they talking about the accessory carpal?
Am I missing something?
Ok if I assume they meant the accessory carpal then that means that the answer is wrong. (at least in butlers book p3, Page 597) He says the accesory carpal does not bear weight.

What do you think?

Look for pisiform ...

Not quite sure but seasamoid and accessory mean the same thing ...here we call them help bones (translation)

No weight works as a pulley for the fLexor tendon :)

Could he mean Distal Sesamoid as in Navicular Bone?

That should be the accessory carpal bone.

You might want to contact Dusty Franklin and order his study guide.

It's a silly way to put it, but it is technically correct. A sesamoid is a bone that is embedded in a tendon or ligament and the accessory carpal is the the best example of this definition.
A quote from Chris Gregory - anatomy guru - "the accessory carpal is located lateral palmar, and does not bear AS MUCH weight as the other carpals as it is located behind the knee."
I found the bloombach book to be very thorough but no guide is perfect, and as far as that goes, the test is a bit ambiguous too. It is easy to be tricked by the way the questions are put.

i might stand corrected racheal but no bone is embedded in any tendon or ligament to the best of my knowledge

Agreed Chris. Rachael, could you explain a bit more what you mean by embedd?

You know that is the problem, I can find three different answers for this question.. Bloombouch says yes, butler says no and apparently Gregory says not as much. It just makes it hard to study with varying opinions.

So are we in agreement that there are talking about the accessory carpal?

This same discussion was in the AFJ about 8 years ago and evidently nothing has been done to correct the question since then.

Well, I can just see that this is critical as hell for a farrier to have a handle on.

Well I can agree, but that does not help me study for the test.

Whatever the answer is in the study guide, is 9 times out of 10, going to be your correct answer. Learn all the test in Blombachs book, and you will pass it. Dustys book is absolutely no help, IMO!

Maybe embedded isn't the best word to use, but that is how it was taught to me. I just did a web search and that is the way it is written medically -

"Sesamoid bone: A little bone embedded in a joint capsule or tendon. The kneecap (in humans) is a sesamoid bone."

The more useful way to say it for farriers is that the sesamoids (at least the proximal and distal) change the direction of pull over a tendon. The accessory carpal doesn't, but it is the better example of the true definition of a sesamoid.

Whether it is critical knowledge to being a farrier is a matter of personal opinion. I would think it is relevant to biomechanics anyways. I think being thorough and correct is important and I enjoy learning new things - sometimes just for fun!

And another thing.......:D
There are many such tricky and debatable questions in the afa tests. It is entirely possible for someone to fail by answering more correctly that the answer sheet they are marking by! I think the bloombach guide is good preparation because it trains you to think about the test format - true and false and multiple choice are not great indicators of solid knowledge, they are a game and you must know how to play it to pass.

racheal , your anatomy research is wrong or at least the terminology being used is wrong . no bone is embedded in any ligament or tendon . the sesamoid bones do not change the direction of pull of the tendon , they centralise it . to keep things very simple a tendon attaches a muscle to its respective bone , there are 4 in the lower leg , 2 extensors (dorsal ) and 2 flexors (palmar ) . ligaments support joints by attaching one bone firmly to another . funicular ligaments are strong cord like ligaments that attach bone to bone . interosseous ligaments are between adjacent bones i.e large metacarpal and small metacarpals . collateral ligaments are situated at the sides of joints and finally annular ligaments fold around tendons to maintain alignment
