So I got lucky today and 2 hoof capsules popped off when I was dissecting them today so they are intact. I am unsure how to keep them from distorting/decaying but figured someone here would know.

Currently they are sitting drying. I know to do varnish treatment but what do I do before varnishing.

They will dry out hard as a brick frog and all. I would make sure all the flesh and blood is off and cut a stick about as big as your thumb to fit inside the hoof capsul at the heels. Kind of a spreader so that the heels dont contract to bad when it dies. They will deffinatly contract and distort the foot if you just leave them to dry.

Alicia,

One of the most reputable figures in equine hoof preservation and modeling is Allie Hayes of "Horse Science" in West Boxford, Massachusetts.

You might try writing her for specific tips on how best to preserve your specimens.

You can reach Allie via her website at:

Hope this helps.

I know in the old days here in Holland they would make ashtrays from hoofcapsules. To prevent distortion the hoofcapsule was filled with plaster that was allowed to set. When all was dried out the plaster was cut out leaving the hoof in it's original shape.

soak in formaldhyde for a couple of weeks and then air dry for a month. this will work on complete legs as well .

Thanks guys I have a few legs left and I am going to try for getting all the capsules off in one piece so maybe I will try a few ideas suggested.... well not sure where one would purchase formaldehyde so that one will be more tricky.

I also read(on a taxidermy forum) about packing in salt to dehydrate the hoof and bones as an alternative to the standard boiling, burying, bleaching thing. Anyone tried this?

I have a question though.

I have 4 remaining legs 2 have shoes and if possible I would like to get the hoof off without removing the shoe.... any ideas for that???

I tried today and inadvertently pulled the shoe off both of them before the hoof capsule gave. The remaining 4 I have soaking to increase the likely hood of hoof capsule release.

Okay do you know her?
I really wanted to ask her a few questions but wasn't sure it was appropriate since she sells hoof/leg models....

I guess the worst she could do is say no right?

Okay so I sent the e-mail fingers crossed.

without something to keep its shape it will contract. the heels will concract the frog will contract and the sole will cup. ive got 2 on my desk that contracted. to give you a idea how much they draw up when he was living he was in size 6 race plates and now its about a size 3.

on the packing it in salt thing i would venture to say that it would speed up the contracting. the contraction sets in as the natural moisture leaves the hoof. salt pulls out moisture.

Boil the foot for 10-15 min (I use a turkey fryer outside) and then put the leg in a plastic bag. Whack the leg over your anvil and the capsule will pop off and the bag will catch it. It might take a few whacks but it works like a charm.

I have stuffed them with "critter clay" (sold at taxidermy supply stores) as it doesn't shrink when it dries. Have to do it reasonably soon as the capsule will distort quickly.. Stick them in the freezer until you know what you want to do. I have also seen them filled with plaster of paris.
