I always understood that a view of the solar margin was necessary in order to make this diagnosis. Is that correct?

Or could a PO diagnosis properly be made with a Lat (that doesn't have the entire foot in the rad), an AP (that doesn't have the entire foot, only the top 1/2 of the coffin bone) and a Navic shot (in which the palmar processes are viewable but they are very light....).

This is a new client with a vet I have never worked with.

The films are less than stellar. I have tried to scan them. I have tried to photograph them. I used my monitor for a light box and I still can get clear shots :o. Is there some trick I am not aware of for nicely getting copies of these films on my computer? If you guys think blue is nice (no idea why I got blue in the photograph), I can upload them.

I do see ringbone and sidebone, neither of which were mentioned to the owner. But Pedal Osteitis.... nope :o

All in all, it isn't the difference in the protocol or the fact that the prescription didn't include the obvious... but, I admit I was surprised to not see the views I expected for the diagnosis given....

I would like to learn if I am missing something. Which could be entirely possible but with the quality of the x-rays... a lot is missing. :)

PO isn't a "catch all" diagnosis.... or, is it?

Thanks a bunch!

Thank you for replying, Jaye. You have a stunning x-ray though.

This is what I have (I did the best I could with what I have)... and no, I did not chop of the foot, the rads are this way. Horse tested negative to hoof testers too.... He's big 17.2, 1600# Perch/warmsomethingerother. weekend warrier for 2 teenage girls that only take lessons on him. Does absolutely nothing inbetween..... except enjoy life. Only slightly off at the trot on a circle to the left.... nothing on the straight. And ever so slight on the circle to the right. Vascular channels look a little bigger, but he's a big horse. What am I missing  Thanks again. Only the LF was radiographed....

Coffin joint is usally subject on Cold blood crosses. analize.

Pastern maybe subject?

A slight wedge and some vet intervention with a needle would help.

Wow, Patty, your "less than stellar" award to these rads is most generous..... must have to pay extra to see the whole foot.....

In my opinion, I can't imagine a responsible Pedal Osteitis diagnosis from only these three views, (or lack of views). The sidebones don't really alarm me here, but the apparent articular ringbone sure gets my attention. I would bet that is probably your huckleberry here.

You didn't say what they had him in, but I might try a shoe that allows an enhanced breakover all around, especially M/L, in conjunction with some type of concussion absorbing solar support such as EquiPac, etc.

Looks like you are on your own as far as any helpful Vet support on this one.... good luck.... please do let us know how you make out.

Dave

I honestly don't think I have ever seen such a poor example of diagnostic material :p I can see movement in the rads too. The owner had no clue that the entire foot wasn't even in the rads. The vet is also demanding these fine examples be returned ASAP as they are the originals and the office can't make copies.

Thanks Dave. We were thinking on the same lines. Although, I see so much blur that the sidebone is all that is really clear to me, LOL! He's only 4 years old :(

He's bare right now, and has been for the last 9 months since they bought him. He's their first horse. They had the shoes pulled a month before bringing him home. He's been progressively getting worse and they finally had the vet out a few weeks ago. Since rads were just done on him before the owner called me, I wanted to see them before shoeing so I just trimmed him in the interim. He was really distorted with underrun heels and flares (don't even know HOW anyone could expect a sound horse on those feet). He's probably a size 6 or maybe even a 7.

Hey, at least it helps a lot to have you guys though. Thank you :)

Maybe some new rads by another vet would clear a bunch of questionable things up on "Fluffy"

No kidding. That was one of my initial suggestions to the owner. But, I'll work with what I've got for now. Thanks
