I was standing on a roof framing an addition within sight of Fort Hood Texas when we heard the news on the radio. I sent my crew home and went home myself. I was still I.R.R. with the US Army.

I will never forget.

I fear that lots of folks in DC are forgetting and do not understand what is required to keep more deaths and memorial parks such as this one.

This is my second Sepetember 11th in Afghanistan. It gives a different perspective on the War on Terror being in the country where it all began, this years anniversary has already past without incident, Ramadan begins in 2 days. If anyone thinks this war is over they should spend some time in the sandbox, I have been to the caves where OBL hid during the initial bombings and have been from corner to corner of this God forsaken country and after 18 months all I can think about is how proud I am to be an American and glad I will be to get home.
I appreciate this thread, I am very afraid that to many have already forgotten.

Just so you know Guy, all of my friends, family and myself have not forgotten. We will never forget. Get home soon and safe.

I think there are a few of us out here who have spent a lot of time in the sand. Being there really makes you appreciate things differently. It's not only this date which should not be forgotten, but the every day awareness of our surroundings and what goes on. Take care Guy and let us know when you get back.

You can say that again. Been there done that.

I was part of the intial Air Force Unit that went into Quatar and built a tent city to house 5000 men and women in order to launch aircraft into Afganistan. We left the US on Sept 25th. Was gone five months.

Nothing like being in another country to help you appreciate what we have here.

GOD of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle-line,
Beneath whose awful Hand we hold,
Dominion over palm and pine,
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget, lest we forget!

Kipling's, Recessional, was written in the late 19th Century, but it's as relevant today as is was then. God love you Guy Buck, and every American soldier who goes in harm's way.

Well here's an interesting coincidence. On the morning of 9/11 I was on the Internet doing business research on "becomming a farrier" . . . when I got a long distance telephone call from a friend in Australia who told me, "TOM, TURN ON YOU TELEVISION RIGHT NOW."

My wife and I were i the kitchen family room , the telly always on
I glanced over to see the first of the planes
I thought gee that clever cinematography what are you watching? Carolyn said that's the news mate
Then our hearts sank with the sickening feeling to realise it was fact
Carolyn and I stood in each others arms in our kitchen for a long time and wept
what an unforgivable wicked sin

Amen to never forgetting.

I lived in lower Manhattan for 10 years...I will never, never forget the shock and horror sitting here in Michigan and watching the buildings that were the view from my window for all those years hit the ground in a cloud of dust.

I grew up with terrorism, 5 year old children in my town killed by a bomb in a shopping centre garbage can...

Ground zero for a 2000 lb truck bomb parked outside the front door of the restauant/bar where I used to work...my mother's best friend's body riddled with broken glass thrown blocks away by that same explosion.

A close friend of mine bought roasted chestnuts from a street vendor outside Harrod's in London, she walked around the corner eating them and before she reached the end of the bag, both the elderly vendor's legs had been blown off.

I will just never fathom how the minds of people capable of commiting these atrocities work.
