I have always thought this way; and Mike F on another thread said something simular to what I have always truely believed in.

1. Obtaining from a B.S.; Masters, or Ph.D. in equine podiatry, paleotology of fossil horses, anatomy/physiology, nutrition, lameness, biomechanics, necropcy of the lower limb, and basic equine studies. Would be at any Vet School in the country added to the corriculumn.

2. Forging of "all" tests using the Union for racing, both Thoroughbred and Standardbred swage test; and the AFA, BWFA, and the Guild testing on a Journeyman level combined for all degree candiates.

3. You would be a Doctor of Equine Podiatry, and of course, with that you still would have to licenced to practice like any other professional.

I believe this is probably the only way to reconized by the horse industry in itself.
Sorry, but licencing it will come one way or another.

As a licensed veterinarian, I can attest to the pros and cons of licensure since it is with me 24/7. It does provide a board to review complaints and to afford some regulation to blantant misrepresentations from individuals who practice veterinary medicine without a degree and thus no licensure. Humans being what they are will always have those few individuals that find their way around the system so these individuals will always be present. Since there is an overseeing governing group in each state there is some degree of public perception that 'big brother' is watching and making sure their animals are not treated with no regard as to outcome. The licensing tests are not overly difficult and the overseeing board members have always been reasonable individuals. I am overseen by the board of veterinary medicine and the board of pharmacy simultaneously. My practice is inspected every three years for compliance in correct handling of medications, correct record keeping, and compliance with continuing education standards. There a re a number of states that do not do routine inspections and I have reviewed some records that were so bad I could lose my license in Virginia if I kept them in that fashion.

On the down side, my major complaint is that licensure has to be maintianed in each state in which you practice so I currently hold and maintain three licenses and may need to add a few more. I have to apply and pay for a Canadian temporary license every time I travel up there if I look at any horses plus have to be sponsored by a Canadian veterinarian on these trips. An overall open licensure for veterinarians in good standing in their states of residency would better serve the horses and their owners I do believe. This 'restriction of trade' has some purpose to stop veterinarians from jumping state lines, plying their wares, and then skipping the state to shirk the possible adverse result of their ministrations, but I really believe veterinarians that would do this are in the minority.

Some healthy debate on this issue is good so that if some form of regulation occurs, perhaps the farrier industry can take the good points from other professions and delete the bad points and do a much better job overall.

If you license you hurt the farrier business in general.....If you don't license you have the inevitable tractor supply shoer running around...Big trade off...I'd rather have someone call me because of a poor trim or shoe...Terrible farriers in general run out of the BS lines and move to a new haunt....Licensing will lead to taxes and politics has no reason to be in any business venture...

By the way, if you disagree I don't care. I stand where I stand.

Opinions are fine. Some guys on here have more opinions than a NYC cabbie. My suspicions were raised when you said almost word for word what Ralph was preaching from his soapbox on his whistle stop anti-licensing tour.

Add to that the fact that he was just on here today saying his students would be here so if I jumped to conclusions my apologies.
