TOPIC: Testing for other organizations

RE:Testing for other organizations 04 Aug 2007 19:46 #91

I don't do any runners, but all that I see coming off the track are in aluminium. I have seen some with training plates (light steel) but only a handful.

I have a question since it has been very many moons since I even nailed on a shoe for a runner. When I did they were all alum and luckily the trainer even supplied them and the nails. He had a farm outside of Orlando and ran his horses at Calder in Tampa. He would call for track conditions in the early morning and we/I would nail the ones he wanted/needed on and load the horses and off he'd go. How many TB racers do run in steel? The Blacksmiths at Ben White Raceway, now thats a whole differant ballgame.

Not many run in steel raceplates any more.
It was until the 1990's even; you trained in steel, and then you put aluminum plates on to run. I did that up to October of 1999, when I did my last training plate shoeing before a race. After that, only put steels on at the farms.

Well, after that I couldn't; I had a baby in November of 2000!!!! :-)

I only do racehorses now on the training track farms, and I put on aluminums raceplates and wide web aluminums. Shoeing more now into the show world; racehorses are just too dangerous to work on, since having a child.
I am slowing down shoeing now; just enjoying being a mom!! :-)

Hey Linda,

I've seen alot of your posts refer to swaging, and how you feel it should be included in any test. Why? I had never swaged a shoe in my life, one day I decided I wanted to, but didn't have a swage block. Here is how my wintery afternoon went.

And the final result...

I'm not saying that swaging isn't part of the job, but I've never had to use it other than to "play" I'm not sayin' my shoe was "perfect" or even "good" but with no instruction at all in about 3 hours I made a swage, and made a finished and nailable shoe. With practice anyone could be good at it.

Why are you so stuck on this??? Just wondering.
Nice work Brian,

This is what everyone should be striving towards finding ways to get it done. There will always be times that you will need things that are unavailable. An ability to fabricate what you need makes you that much more valuable.

As to Linda mentioning this pretty often I think is from her frame of reference. Racetrackers place a lot of importance on this skill as they have for many years. This is the part of the industry that she comes from.

This thread began as testing for other organizations. The racetrack and JHU testing usually requires demonstrating an ability to swage. For this reason I think it relevent to this discussion.

finally able to download your picture, my computer is the [jpg]? don't ask? to see.
Good job! That is for showhorse swedging for turf in jumping cross-country horse trails. Also, way back when (1900's - 1960's) you did a french calk to the inside and block with trailer to the outside of the hind shoes to complete the set; especially with Arabians?? not sure, if any one has info on why in the 1940's, do tell.
I'll have to post a swage of racehorse style. It is much thinner with toe-grabs, and a block and sticker. I have one I made, but not the best. It has mistakes on it.............................Linda..............................

Mikel,
I agree with your comments completely. I am curious, what would you think of mandatory licensing with education being the only requirement to obtaining one? Any school of thought, just proof of education in horseshoeing?

My thought is you have to be book smart along with being about to correctly put a shoe on a horse. As far as education goes we never stop learning. All licensing does is test one to a set task, standard and condition. I am all for testing my ability to know how much I have learned and if I can meet the set standard. But this does only one thing - it just states the person can meet the standard. It doesn't make him/her a good farrier.

I have attended the school of hard knocks for many years. I believe my test is being able to meet my customer's needs and watch a horse walk off better when it is done than when I began. I am currently working to get licensed here only because a law was thought up for it. Just because I get that piece of paper doesn't mean I will do good work, it only means I know how to meet the standards of the test and am able to pass it. For me two completely different issues.

Linda we have a whole lot more dog and cat or just cow vets but the ones around here that have alittle bit of horsesense do relie on a few of us that have good communication with them. I get alot of nice accounts from differant Vets in my area because I don't challenge them but try to communicate with them and gain their respect.

sorry dear, but sometimes there is just no talking to vets.

ex. my client had and still has a bad footed TB running. I have tried to the best of my ability to make it as best as possible; horse was to be injected in the ankles before racing. Vet said, "Wow you got a new blacksmith; great job on the feet!!!".....Trainer said it was me......... the vet got mad!! Trainer shakes he head in disbelief. Go figure!...happens to me every time.
