The overall convention makes money. Those that report a $5k loss in the contest do not specifically attribute the convention registration fees collected from competitors and spectators to contest revenues. As far as I know there is no way to seperate out each individual activity's revenue stream. For example, would a well attended lecture be considered profitable and a lesser attended a loss...regardless of content? Hence my previous reference to Abe Lincoln's famous quote, "Liars figure, figures lie".

I have not been to competition in person. But I have two years of it on DVD sets and its amazing. I learned alot watching Steven Beane and Billy Crothers and James Blurton I found really educational. Will it be in CAlgary again or are you moving it I am confussed on location. How can I copete for foreign spot on Team? Thanks, Jacques.

an American team there i would feel the compitition woudent

be the same it would like no Brazil in the world cup
its a sad day if you have no team going to these events

As Ron said in the same discussion on the AFA board:

"Tom Gary is P i ssed off. He is just a single example of how the membership in general feels. IMO you, the EC and the BoD need to listen to them and figure out how to address their anger in real ways. If this isn't done the AFA is going to continue to tear itself apart and its fractured fabric is never going to heal."

I still feel this way. Just because the election is over doesn't change any of this.
Gary,

I am glad you were listening but I have to make a correction to what I said and that you quoted. When I said, "He is just a single example of how the membership in general feels," I was in error in my read of the feedback that I was getting. I should have said, "He is a single example of a growing and significant percentage of the membership." As the elections have reveled I overstated the level of discontent and mistrust in the membership. I would tend to believe however that if things do not change in more positive ways and those in office don't stop saying and acting one way when they are running for office and another once they are in office the "growing and significant percentage" could easily become a majority in relatively quick order.

Just to clarify an important point. The elections are over and before the results were known I gave Dick my word to work to support him in any way I could if he won. It is my intent to do exactly that as long as I do not have to compromise my integrity or what I believe is good for the AFA. If he and I disagree on a request I intend to keep those conversations wholly and completely between him and I because that is what men of honor do and I owe him that respect.

The issue of the WCB proposal is one that will require the leaders on both sides of the issue to act like statesmen and diplomats to negotiate a resolution arrived at in good faith.

At this point all I see are children in men’s bodies kicking sand at each other in a vain attempt to establish their dominance in an argument that should properly be a discussion. If they don't mind looking like children and failing to move the issue forward in a positive manner that is up to them. But, it should be clear to any breathing sentient being that in this instance it is unlikely that ignoring the need or potential for change is likely going to be healthy for everyone in the long run.

Gents, I strongly and fervently suggest that you in the leadership of both sides look up the words diplomacy and statesmanship in the dictionary and start attempting to emulate what the definitions tell you those words mean. I believe that you are all capable of it, and I believe that if you do not move forward on this proposal in a real and meaningful way guided by the standards of statesmanship and diplomacy we are all going to pay a terrible price for your testosterone laden behavior.

Craig,

Thanks for putting me in touch with Julie, we emailed today. I learned alot but I'm really trying to know just what we are competeing for. Is there actual prize money avaialable to win? It's a big trip and commitment for me to travel and take time off, so I'd really like to know for sure if I have a shot at a cash prize? That wasn't clear in the emails with Julie, though she was informative about joining, scheduling, etc. Please let me know I need to decide quick.

Thanks, Sarah

Sarah,
The whole team is going to Bossier and meeting up in Houston first. Todd Walker is going from Austin and I'm sure he would get you a ride. Or at least somebody from that area.

As far as the cash prizes go we have cash and prizes totaling $10,000.00 We are giving a Buckle for each high point rank and overall high point. I don't know what skill level you are at so it would be hard to say if you are going to get in the booty. I can say that you are going to learn a whole lot and leave with a great experience.
So far we have 40 competitors registered and more coming in every day that is why everything is approximate at this point. On April 13th we will post the go rounds on our website. We hope you can make it because we are jacked up and excited.

Sarah, how do you keep the horses from eating that flower in your hair?

Phil,

As a proponent of "natural horsemanship" you should know that all she has to do is lay her ears back whenever a horse reaches for that flower. :D

Now that would strictly be up to the Board now wouldn't it. After all thats the reason we have a BOD to make the hard dicissions. Popular or not.

Actualy seperating out each activities revenue stream would be quit simple. Some items for example, the contest and Banquet, should pay for them self without any money from general convention fees. Convention registration fees should be totaly seprate from contest entrance fees. If the contest does not stand on it own then it a loss no matter how you look at it.

Like you said, "Liars figure, figures lie". However, I only believe this happens when inapporiate records are kept, and budgets are mismanaged.

Craig,

Where can I find a list of names of competitors entered and class schedule in Louisiana? My friends and I might like to go watch. Also, will this be on TV or are you making a DVD set like the past few years? I gave my farrier the DVD set from the past two years and he loved it, he used to compete when he was younger. Please let me know ASAp. thanxs, Annie & John :)

Annie & John,
I think you have mistaken us for the World Championship Blacksmiths Competition in Calgary. They have made some DVDs from the past couple of years. Actually the woman who produces those videos is associated with the man I am having dialogue with on this thread (President elect Andrew Elsbree) We in fact are a membership based production company that in fact is putting on 5 venues across the United States the first being in Bossier City, LA. We would be happy to get you the list of competitors April 12th after the entries close.

In order to vote in poll on top of this page does the voter have to be a member of the AFA and WCB?

Please help on this one. Thanks, Sarah

I was wondering if anybody wants to take another poll to see if texmex is a real person or a fictious character? Just wondering if I was the only person wondering?
