Actually, its the BODY that creates the pus; not the bacteria. Pus is comprised of white blood cells to fight off infection. The greater the infection the greater the abscess. They (the pus cells) are sent to the infection by a process known as chemotaxis, usually triggered by cytokines released from macrophages that sense invading organisms.

Sorry, read that little ditty about the pus being created by the bacteria and couldn't let it go by because its simply incorrect.

(PS -- I was also given a 'pass' to post in the forums even though I am not a farrier and never have claimed to be one. That being said, I am not a BUA, either.)

Also haven't seen u giving advise when it comes to a shoeing question..like I said its trim advice but its trim advise as it is in question before a shoe go back on from what I recall..

I don't disagree.

And no one modality of hoofcare works on all horses for all situations. Shoeing is one choice someone could make. Some alternatives I would consider are a bead of Superfast with Soleguard, removable boots or use some of that DuraSole product that has label claims of being "extremely effective in the relief of sole soreness" and "used extensively for transitioning horses from shod to barefoot" (yes, he really says that).:D
Denise

Yes Denise you could do all that stuff, but there is still no better way, that is as durable, simple, cost effective and easy to do (with the right training), and harmless to the horse, as a properly nailed on metal shoe. This modality works very well for a very large majority of horses. It also seems that the no nails crowd thinks that the only use a horseshoe should have is hoof protection, which is very simplistic. As for the use of boots as an alternative, there is a very small window of usability. Here in the Northeast, they fill up with mud, make horses move sloppily and work harder. Boots provide poor ground reaction and traction especially for horses at speed. Those of us who ride horses fast and hard find boots useless and even detrimental. I have done lots of experiments with shoes, no shoes, etc. and ride the horses that I shoe. Working horses need good shoes, athletic horses need athletic shoes,
and that's that! You are dreaming if you think otherwise.

@ Callabus - You really need to expand your definition and understanding on pus.

pus (ps) n. A generally viscous, yellowish-white fluid formed in infected tissue, consisting of white blood cells, cellular [including bacteria cells] debris, and necrotic tissue

The body responds to both dead devitalized tissue and invading bacteria through the inflammatory pathway. The responding fluid of the inflammatory pathway contains both "soldiers" to remove dead and invading tissue and as well rich enticing nutrients to heal and grow new tissue. So this defending fluid is also a very inviting medium to bacteria and the like.

And we all know bacteria is everywhere in the environment looking for a restaurant.

So once an abscess is open and drains into the environment, it is going to have bacteria and will readily support bacterial growth. In fact, the more the bacteria proliferates, the more the body sends this fluid to do battle. The more the bacteria is flourishing, the thicker and more opaque and colorful the drainage will be, not to mention odorous.

So pus is not so much only a body fluid of defending soldiers, nutrients and or body trash, once open to the environment it also contains invading bacteria.

So if you are "looking at pus" - it is a given that bacteria is present and it will need care to manage the bacteria.

I've said for years; "You can lead a horse owner to logic, but you can't make them think".

Thinking on this subject today I've come to the conclusion that we as Farriers are approaching this all wrong.
We have to start making claims.
Steel shoes prevent blindness.
They increase liver function.
Stop cancer before it's detected.
The harmonic balance radiating from shoes have positive effects on the rider too.
Just a few to start with, you can learn the rest at one of my seminars or when you purchase the DVD set. I should probably buy a PhD first.

Just another absolute proof positive as to my blindness prevention discovery.
I shod a barefoot horse and the owner went out the next day to enjoy the comfort, protection and support the new steel shoes provided. The horse was acting very strange and actually threw her off. Knowing the mare was not right, she examined her and found a tumor in the right eye. The Vet said she had 70% vision loss in that eye. Laser treatment was performed restoring almost all of the vision.
Any argument that the shoes were not the main factor in saving this beautiful, graceful and precious animal's sight shows a hatred for all animals.

At our county fair, I was holding my daughter's hereford heifer outside the horse barn, while she was changing clothes, I asked our local barefoot hoofcare specialist how much training/schooling did it take to do her job. She very quickly bragged that since attended a special Pete Ramey seminar, all of 2 1/4 days, she was certified. She offered to give me an introductery multiple horse discount. I told her my cow's feet were fine for right now but if she didn't sell well, I'd call her...

Hope your cow sold well. :D I wouldn't let a Pete Ramey certified trimmer touch my dog.

Hey, I went to a 2-day Ramey clinic, would have thought 50 years of shoeing would have moved me to certification - guess it probably counted against me. Anyhow nobody told me I could be certified. I did trim 14 horses this week tho and they were comfortable barefoot. Watched Pete take shoes off a half dozen and sell a half dozen sets of easyboots. I must still be doing something wrong. I'll get it right if I live long enough.

Jack,
Pete was probably offended by the type of PhD you have. The kind that are earned, not the Visa-Master Card type he has.

I said Pete but I was thinking of K.C. Lapiere. He's the one who bought the phony degree.
I have heard that Pete Ramey has been apologizing to Farriers at the beginning of his clinics. He seems to be learning and it should be noted.
Jack of course is 100% bonified.

My daughter got good money at the livestock sale at the fair; so no cow trimming in the future. Somebody told the barefoot specialist who I was and now she is angry for "dissing" her. I thought I was very polite and I let her talk and talk and talk and tell me how wonderful she was....
