Cody,

Sorry should have answered here also, I answered on another thread to a question that Bruce Mathews asked,

basically, Fran did contact me by e mail and a phone call, so now we know that she is aware of the discussion here.

In an effort to get this one back on track, what exactly is the problem here?

A few years ago AFA raised dues to cover the cost of producing this magazine. Did their advertisers pull out? Were they not getting any articles submitted? Was it a combination of these things? Anybody know?

I have talked with Danvers but have received no communication from the AFA. My understanding is that the expenses for the database and the World Eq Games have forced cutbacks.

Proper surveys require deeper analysis than some may realize when embarking on such an effort. A lack of familiarity with Demings work may leave some daunted when faced with process control, pivot tables and deriving standard deviations from a mean.

I invested months on a similar AFA project a few years ago. It was fascinating work with remarkable results.

The work was tabled and the results never published.

Change is.... difficult.

Cheers,
Mark

Mark, you just aren't good enough, don't have the tenure, big and bad enough, been shoeing horses long enough, won enough forging competitions, proved yourself at the local level, to have the AFA take your business experience, academic background, and leadership ability seriously.

Just shut up and pay your dues.

A good bit of that is probably true. ;)

Things have gotten better.

That wasn't entirely my experience. My role was to gather data, perform the analysis and present the information. The executive team and committee leaders provided a forum for presentation and discussion on more than one occasion. Can't say what, if any, changes may have been resultant. That role belonged to others.

That honestly hasn't been my experience with the AFA. Leadership project interest appeared sincere. All of my other interactions with the AFA have been generally positive. Their decision to halt the magazine was probably not a good business decision, but when I joined the AFA it wasn't really about a magazine subscription. My intent was and remains to learn something about shoeing a horse. Thus far, I've gotten my monies worth.

Don't know if my "voice" would have meant anything or not but I wasn't engaged in providing personal opinion. The goal was to present data driven information. Data tends to have a "voice" of its own.

In the sense of relevance to the need for organizational skills and business acumen it is totally false. Though it is certainly ok for you to feel good about having that sort of smoke blown up you a s s.

You have data to quantify that? Increased membership? Better fiscal practices? Better adherence to the 5 tenants? 'Zactly what is better? Being on the outside I don't get to hear the good news. Is there hope and change?

So there were no tangible results? Aren't those who have "that role" obligated to report to those who elected them? Isn't there something about "communication" in those 5 tenants?

Indeed.

Where is this data regarding "things getting better" and "monies worth?"

I think the only truly successful role the AFA has played, in this business, over the years, has been providing the venue for shoers to meet and greet on neutral ground. Other organizations also do that to a greater or lesser degree.
Without the AFA, I believe there would be a lot of folks I would not have the pleasure of knowing; my wife included.

Past tense.

Seems other organizations have eclipsed the AFA in this situation.

Seems to me the AFA got run over by the Internet.

Tom, the context of my response was specific. Go back and read it again.
You have data to quantify that? Increased membership? Better fiscal practices? Better adherence to the 5 tenants? 'Zactly what is better? Being on the outside I don't get to hear the good news. Is there hope and change?

Was in reference to "proving myself at the local level". Had little to do with the AFA. You mixed apples and oranges and I responded in kind.
So there were no tangible results? Aren't those who have "that role" obligated to report to those who elected them? Isn't there something about "communication" in those 5 tenants?

The results of the data analysis were made available to leadership. That is what I was tasked to accomplish. As to obligations and communication, I'll leave that for others to address. I fulfilled my commitment and left the rest up to those in charge.
How did or does the AFA deliver this monies worth?

"My" monies worth. Can't speak to others perceptions. I've gotten value for my investment.
Where is this data regarding "things getting better" and "monies worth?"

Again, apples and oranges. The data analysis had nothing to do with whether or not things are getting better for me locally or whether or not I'm getting "my" monies worth.

Cheers,
Mark
