I'm probably one of the few who doesn't see a need for vets and farriers to work that closely together.

Besides farriers who work for a vet clinic, what does the farrier really need a vet for?

I understand when something isn't right with a horse the farrier and vet will have to communicate on occasion. How long does that conversation really take? 2 minutes? A quick glance at an xray to see angles, vertical depth......

Perhaps before worrying about what the vets are up to we ought to take a closer look at the work we're doing.

I am not suggesting that vets and farriers should work on horses together with frequency. I am suggesting that both occupations have a place in the welfare of the horse, and that we should respect each others role. I am not a technician, and a veterinarian is not a podiatrist.

Historically veterinarians recognized the value of the farrier, and the "futility in trying to make practical horseshoers out of veterinarians".

I agree, and i also think it's comforting to the owner to see that two professionals are working together to help their horse.

I guess I see farriery as a whole in the US as a disaster which no one would respect.

Here's an example -

Question - "Why do you do **** work?"

Answer - "I didn't have any money and had a family to feed so I had to make money and learn on the job"

The farriers job is so important that anybody can pick up some tools and start making a living and you think vets paying off college loans are going to respect that?

Pipe Dreams!

I am not sure what people you are talking about, but I see the opposite. In my experience, horse owners seem to value a good farrier over a good vet. Both are important, but it is more difficult to find a good farrier and the horse owner tends to require the farrier more frequently than the veterinarian.

And why is it difficult to find a good farrier?

Not quite sure what to say in this matter but here is an example from the "Everyday Shoeing" thread of a collaboration between vet and farrier.

Pat, I don't know how you can say you see the opposite then two sentences later claim horse owners have a difficult time finding a good farrier.

If horse owners are having a problem finding a good farrier, I guess that means they don't have a problem finding a bad farrier? Does that not say something about the farriery industry as a whole?

Vets and Farriers have no formal education in farriery. Therefore, respect is on an individual basis.

Good point, perhaps it would be better to say that a client values a farrier above a veterinarian. I would agree that veterinarians are respected more as a group than farriers.

Compared to trainers, vets and farriers are all second class citizens. :D

Veterinarians are accorded respect by virtue of the DVM/VMD, farriers on the other hand have to gain respect. A task, in some areas, made difficult by the general level of farriery. While various groups certify farriers and should help give credence to the profession, in some instances the standards are so laughably low as to only invite ridicule. And where the standards are significantly higher, so little has been done to raise horse owner and veterinarian
awareness that conferred certifications are almost meaningless in terms of garnering respect.

I have far more radiographs than photographs but I should be able to get some posted. The bulk of my "everyday" work contains more hoof pathology than fully 'normal' horses. I do a fair amount of maintenance work on chronic laminitics and some horses with hoof issues that are tricky to maintain. I also like doing show Saddlebreds when I get the opportunity. Those horses will let you know very quickly when something is not just right.
