i can only say that the image we see of the usa over here is obviously very different over there . the way the media (american) portay your country makes it look very unsavoury ,and the way the american lifestyle gets pushed in our faces through constant advertising is a real turn off for a lot of folk , yor people in chargedo not do the real folk in your land many favours . i say as an outsider that the best diplomat i have come across from your land woiuld have to be craig trnka an asset to america

It would also do well to remember that the southern half of this country is only America due to being defeated, occupied and tyranized by America, not by choice.

So the southern states weren't part of America before 1861?:confused:

What the hell would the media know about our lifestyle? Politicians live like rock stars off our labor and the media tells you what they want you to think.

Yes but that was before the taxes of the north became to big a burden.

You are exactly right. The issue of slavery was political manipulation . It would have been hard to raise an army to go south and enforce the non payment of Federal taxes, hence the emotional issue.

Yes, we were, but grew incresingly disenchanted with our taxes going to support northern infastructure, among other things.

The main issue was the difference between the northern and southern economies. The north had fast growing industry and the south was primarily agricultural.

The south purchased many imported manufactured goods and the north needed high taxes, teriffs and other trade restrictions to protect their industries and sell their goods.

Most people in the south didn't have slaves but the high taxes and high prices on manufactured goods hurt everybody in the south.

It looks like the federal government is trying really hard to make the whole thing happen again. If the divide were along geographical lines, I think the game would be on.

Then why do we have a problem with illegal immigration and everyone wanting to come here to live from all over the world.

History eh?

You get told what they want you to hear... I'd never heard those things before.

An irony strikes me that what made the USA declare independence was the very same reason for the civil war... if indeed that is the real reason...

...interesting.

I think it is important to make the distinction between corporate/bureaucratic America and ordinary folks. For we outsiders, there is much to despise about the former, but I will defend most ordinary Americans as some of the most wonderful people on the planet.

I am waiting for the day when these people reclaim their country. ;)

Historical footnote: Pres. Lincoln asked for and Congress passed legislation establishing the FIRST income tax in the US, in the fall of 1861, as a form of war funding , AFTER the start of the war. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of what you believe

The image we see from the media is off base. The media, corporate America and politicians are totally disconnected. A little over 10 years ago my wife and I took the kids across the country on a road trip. From Maine to Montana in a pickup truck and camper. It was a great experience and to this day our children know to take what they see in the media and hear from politicians with a grain of salt. I agree about Craig Trnka, fortunately their are a lot like him in this country, I would say it is the majority. I see great people over here everyday, different nationality's, race, color, culture all good people and great Americans. The majority of youth in this country are awesome. Sometimes you hear a few older folks complain about the youth in America as if it is the end of world, I just wonder what rock have they been living under.

I don't think any one mentioned income tax. A big issue was import taxes. States rights were also a big issue which went back to the very beginning.
