I doubt anyone actually believes slaughtered horse meat ends up in hamburger.

Why do you doubt it, Jim. I've seen it on European menus. Picture taken 2007 in Northern Italy.

The best things about the good old days -- I wasn't good and I wasn't old.

The older I get, the more horses I shoe, the fewer things that I can absolutely, positively fix.

Jack, I was referring to our US Beef when I wrote that. From talking with the guy at the slaughter house he made it sound like the horse meat was far to valuable in europe to be used as cheaper substitute here in the US. My wife has had it offered to her many times on her horse trips to europe and said she tried it and was not impressed compared to home raised beef. And my best organic home raised beef pales in comparison to that Yellowstone Elk.;)

We have a lot of local horse meat butchers here ..
The only thing really is that the animals are old and sick ,lame that get slaughted ,which means you have no way of knowing if they are full of drugs up to the fatal day..
One of the traditional dinners here is sauer braten ..which is meat soaked for some time in vinager for a week or so ..good way to get old meat soft ..
few years back i would have been horse but is now mostly beef..

A farrier and I were talking shop, and he told me "Did you hear that in few months, if the animal rights people have their way; there will not be any dead animal removal from farms; you will have to disposed the animal another way.
Reason is:
They don't want meat by-products in the pet food products any longer!!!
Has anyone else heard of such a thing?

PS. I did not make this up.

From what I understand, this only applies to ruminants... (i.e. cows) and is to prevent spinal tissue (brains/spinal cord) from entering the food supply, not some left-wing animal rights agenda. Protein rendering companies would have to remove all brain/spinal tissue prior to rendering, so instead they are simply not going to accept ruminants. If someone knows more or can correct me please do so.

Horse meat is not all that bad. While deployed to Kosovo, I had orders to travel to Albania. While there I was ask after we ate how I liked the meal. I replied good - was told it was donkey!! Not too bad.

The problem with what you like and don't like mostly lies between your ears. If you don't know what it is, most will eat and enjoy.

.........................................UPDATE................................

It's in the Lancaster Farming Issue.
They will not be able to pick-up dead cows on the farms any longer, so not to get into the pet food for the prevention of "Mad-cow" disease. Not sure whether this is a PA state ruling, or going national across the country or not. Anyone knows, please jump in!

Sean, we have a lot of animal rights groups here in the last 15 years trying to stop shoeing horses, owning, riding, they closed many parks to riding, ect, ect.......So that's why jumped in on the animal rights people, on What are THEY up to next attitude...............I'll tell you more if I see ya!.................Linda Marie:)

Saw where Montana passed a horse slaughter bill into law. Don't know where it'll go, but a step in the right direction.

Clint, I dont like to think much about Horse slaughter because of my obvious love for the animal. While I hold horses to high estime the mear fact is that I think the idea that it is ok to slaughter goats, pigs, sheep, cows, oxen... whatever and not horses is kind of hypocritical. The plain fact is unwanted horses get turned out to starve, they get treated very poorly and suffer because people cant afford to take care of them or whatever the reasoning may be. Youve seen much more of this since the slaughter bans have taken place in the US...
